Those of you that have been following me on Twitter know that last Friday I started on my own kitchen project. We got the entire old kitchen demoed out, as well as the room underneath it (scope creep). We put down new subfloor to get rid of all the squeaks, and got a good start on the plumbing. Today we are ordering our flooring, white rubber tiles, and looking at countertops. I hope to finish up the plumbing and start on the electrical.
Check out my tweets to see how I'm doing!
This entry hits close to home, about a mile away at most. Tristen and his family have been going through a very similar remodel as ours, only their house is cooler, he's got mad design skills, and their done. Yes I'm a little jealous. They did a great job on the kitchen and the whole house. Check out their blog for more info.
Our kitchen remodel was just a portion of an entire house renovation. The existing kitchen felt tiny and cramped. It was also completely dated. We had the whole house dry-walled, and I put down new Brazilian Koa flooring throughout, so those costs are not included in the approximate cost. I reframed an existing wall so that there is a long pass-thru into the living room. The cabinets, counter top, sink and faucet, and stove backsplash are all Ikea. To gain more space in the kitchen I moved the bar cabinets where the sink is out 6-8" which makes a significant difference. We kept the stove and sink in the same locations to save the money re-plumbing and re-wiring would have cost us. We originally wanted to do a tile backsplash, but couldn't find a tile we liked at an affordable price. We ended up using stainless end panels from a different style of Ikea cabinets. Instead of using corner cabinets in the kitchen, we turned the "corner" cabinets so that they face into the dining room and living room and provide storage for those rooms. We used energy star appliances and low-VOC paint to finish out the space.
Approx price $5,000 + appliances

Modern Materials Design, who I just mentioned in my last post, is teaming up with another local design store and having a huge warehouse sale. There will be all sorts of goodies, and rumor is there is a leather sofa for $295 and a sectional for $275. Modern Materials Design had a lot of EQ3 furniture, so expect to see some of their stuff at discounted prices. The hours are pretty limited, and the good deals usually go quick. See you down there!
Some of you locals may remember Modern Materials Design. They were a local modern shelter store that started out by the Green Ant, and later moved down the road towards The Light Spot. More recently they closed up their doors, and went online only. For a while the online store wasn't the best, but they just recently relaunched and it's looking pretty sweet. They have some especially good deals on modern pillows, starting at $20 for 17" x 17". When I was at the Las Vegas Furniture Fair, they had some really sweet large fiberglass planters, so keep your eyes out for those too.

Liam found some great lamps on KSL.com yesterday for $25 a piece. I am so tempted to buy them, but I am kind of on the fence, so I thought I put it out there to see if anyone else wanted them. Any real details about them are a little fuzzy, besides the fact that they are "Danish Modern". I did call and talk to the lady yesterday and she confirmed that they are some sort of wood (wenge?) and the white part is ceramic. They really are 39" tall, which is a big lamp. The shades are the kind that clip onto the light bulb, so it would be easy to switch them out if you wanted to. It doesn't sound like she is going to budge on the price, as she has had quite a bit of interest already. If somebody gets these, let us know!
I was also looking for kitchen appliances and found these two stoves for a good price. I think we really want to do a cooktop and built in oven, so will probably pass, but if anyone else is looking for a stove, check these out. They are both Jenn Air. The one on the left is a dual fuel and is priced at $600. The one on the right is gas only, but is only $100!
In case you didn't already hear the news, I just picked up 6 Emeco 1006 chairs from Craig's List. The original listing said it was 4 for $250 or $70 each. I placed the call and found out that John really had 6 for sale. I offered him $340 for all 6 and he was kind enough to agree. That's just over $55 each, normal pricing is $395 for one. I almost feel guilty for picking them up that cheap. Luckily John got them for cheap himself from a bar in Reno that was closing. He didn't tell me what he paid for them, but I got the idea that he wasn't really loosing money on them. They really are great chairs, light, bombproof, comfortable with timeless style. We don't have a place for them yet, but it has spurred us to get going on our kitchen remodel so we can actually have a dinning room table to accommodate them. If your looking for more good deals on local stuff, see the post above, or challenge Melissa to find you something good.
Thanks again to all the GRM readers that contribute!
A super big thanks to Melissa, who commented in the "Style Oceanic Chair" post about some original Emeco's that were for sale local and cheap. I took a trip out and picked them up last night. Details and pics to come!
GRM readers rock!
Ikea must be trying to do their part at easing the pain of the recent economic downfall because it seems that they have had an unprecedented number of great sales lately. This one may beat them all however. From this Saturday through Monday the 13th they are having another "Seize the Days" sale with some big savings. TUNDRA flooring is $0.49 a sq ft, the NORDEN dining table is $199 and Ikea 365 cookware is super cheap too. That's over 50% off on some things. Plus did I mention free breakfast again on Saturday morning?

I have been vowing for over a year now to get up a decent links section to all the other wonderful blogs that are out there. I'm finally determined to get it done, so if you have a blog that our readers would be interested in, contact me and let me know and I'll add it to my links. I'm especially interested in starting a SLC blog list, so even if you have sent me a link in the past, do me a favor and resend it.
Thanks!
It's been just over two years since I updated the look of the website here at Grasrootsmodern, and in those two years we have seen an incredible amount of growth thanks to you. So much grown in fact that we were starting to look like a fat man in a little jacket here. Our sidebars suffered the most with a lot of navigation and other content being pushed down way to far by advertisements. So we loosened our belt and added an extra column just for our sponsors, after all they make it possible to pay some of the hosting bills. Being the cheapskate that I am, I did all the coding myself, instead of paying someone so if you see something funny please let me know. Also if there are any improvements/features that you would like to see, speak up! Hopefully you all like the new look.
Not only am I just finding out that there are plans underway for a huge Frank Gehry designed mixed residential/commercial project here in Utah, but Frank Gehry himself was here a couple of days ago to show the plans for the project and answer any questions that the public had. It's obvious that the Gehry designed project is going to shake up Utah architecture quite a bit, which has some people concerned. Personally I have to agree with Gehry when he said
There's been a lot of stuff around here that I wouldn't call great architecture at this point, but I think if we do something special, other people might step up to the plate and it might up the ante,

We used to have two big spotlights on a motion sensor on our garage. Over the last month or so the motion sensor has gotten progressively worse until it was almost non functional. This weekend we finally got around to replacing the whole light fixture. We found these nice weather tight industrial lights in the "barn section" of Sutherlands, a local hardware store. We ended up buying one for the front of the house, and one for our back porch. I love the look of them, and love the $18 price tag even more. The one in the front we added a little bit of hardware to make it turn on and off automatically depending on the amount of daylight. Needless to say, we are quite happy to be rid of the two huge, non-functional spotlights.
While this isn't an original Saarinen tulip chairs and table set, this retro table and chair combo does have a wonderful vintage look to it. The set includes a table approx. 45" long, 35" deep and 29" tall and 5 chairs. Overall it looks like they are all in pretty good shape, and at an asking price of $200 they probably won't last too long.
Available from SLC Craigslist for $200.
It seems like Ikea is all about the three day sales lately. We were out of town for the last labor day sale, but some friends were nice enough to pick up a cheap POANG for us. This weekend is another three day extravaganza. If you were ever wanting to pick up a BILLY bookcase, now is your chance. They are $30 off normal price. The SATER leather sofa is on sale to for $299 which seems like an insanely good deal on a decent sofa. Oh, and did I mention they have free breakfast?

Even though we just bought a house, I still try and keep a pulse on what's for sale here in Salt Lake City. While homes with modern/contemporary exteriors are still few and far between, there are more and more available with clean modern interiors. A good example is my friend Mark's house. His family is building a new (super modern) home and selling their old house. It's in a great neighborhood, and while it doesn't look like much from the outside, they have done some great work on the inside. For more details on price, square footage, and more photos, check it out on zillow.

Whether you are a jetset junkie, or you just like going on picnics every chance you get, an insulated bag is a great way to keep your food cold (or hot). I've bought simple plastic ones from Rockhill Creamery at our farmers market to keep things cool, and they worked great. If you are looking for something a little more stylish however, definitely check out the canvas cooler bags by Sagaform. Unica home has them in stock in black or khaki, with the small size starting at only $29.
Available from Unica Home $29 - $ 69.
Being the cheepskate that I am, free is one of my favorite words, and almost nothing is better than free furniture. That's why I was excited to run across this little ditty the other day as I was riding my bike home from work. It has obviously seen better days, but I'm really pretty fond of the overall shape of it. It almost has that mid century wingback chair look to it. Of course it is a little worse for the wear, and it probably needs a good reupholstering. I have thought about doing it myself, but realistically I may be better off just taking it somewhere. I have a little trick up my sleeve for inexpensive material to use. I plan on getting a used wool blanket from a local army surplus. The color options are orange, (shown rolled up on the couch) white, grey and of course army green. I am leaning towards the grey.
Anyone know a cheap place to get it reupholstered here in Salt Lake City?
I have some good friends who have recently purchased a wonderful old Mid Century Modern home in Salt Lake City, and they are in the middle of updating the interior. While looking at kitchen appliances online at Jenn-Air they found this picture entitled "Scandanavian Oasis" and completely fell in love with all the white. The cabinets and appliances will be easy to reproduce (Ikea and Jenn-Air) but the white flooring has got them (and me) stumped.
So how do you get white flooring like the one in this picture?
