Phloem Studio

Phloem Studio is a furniture shop based out of Portland, OR, with an eye for great design and a knack for building gorgeous, custom furniture and cabinets. Each piece of furniture is built to order by hand with the finest materials available, allowing you to customize wood species, dimensions, and other important details. Occasionally, unique one-off pieces can be purchased through their Esty shop.

Looking through their portfolio, I'd have to say my favorite piece is the Boomer Bench. I love the subtle divots and tapered legs aka pure sexiness! If you're in the market for some custom built furniture, don't pass up Phloem Studio: their pieces are built to last!

Way Back When: Gunter Behnisch

It's always sad when a good architect passes on, and this week Germany mourns the passing of a great one.

Gunter Behnisch, a former U-boat commander who became West Germany's top architect, died on Monday aged 88. His radical modern designs, including the Munich Olympic Stadium, marked a departure from the bombastic architecture of the Nazi era and shaped the face of the new German democracy.

DIY Shelving inspiration

Just to show that shelving doesn't need to be complicated, here are two DIY looking projects that I have come across lately.

The first one uses some simple wooden ladders as a support for the cabinets. I'm thinking that you might be able to find something at Ikea to help you pull it off.

Shown above is the Container System 1530 by Postfossil. Made of simple plywood boxes that are held together by standard foldback paper clips. Pretty simple. Once again,you might even be able to pull off the same look with some simple boxes from Ikea.

New Project :: House 2

Today I'm thrilled to announce we will be following a new local modern home construction project. It's called House 2 as it is the second house designed by the architect for this particular lot near downtown Salt Lake. It is the first single family residence of new construction whose funding source is the Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City (RDA). The project is in one of SLC's only FEMA Flood Zones, requiring it to be built 1 foot above the flood plain. The project will be constructed as a joint venture by Sausage (Mark Haslam) and Benchmark Modern.

From the architect/owner:

The house is a 1,200 SF, including 2 bedrooms and a bath + a separate Work Space building of 200 SF which includes a half bath. The project will be occupied by a devilishly hansom couple and their child to be. The project parameters and restraints included the owners paranoia, privacy issues associated with an adjacent apartment building and neighboring property, historical precedent and context, zoning restrictions, FEMA restrictions, and budget. The single level house is 'L' shaped and is separated into two volumes, the higher of which contains an open kitchen, living, and dining space and the lower of which contains the bedrooms and bath. The houses primary focus is on a south facing side court with access to the court from all spaces through large sliding glass doors. The recessed entry is covered by a cantilevered canopy that meets the setback of the adjacent covered porches prevalent on the street. Building materials of the project include cladding of blackened cedar and raked cement plaster, bent steel canopies, and clear anodized aluminum clad VG fir windows. The house uses passive ventilation for cooling, and a high efficiency combined boiler, for the radiant heat, and on-demand hot water. The house will be completed by November of 2010.

Outdoor Furniture :: John Kelly

Hot damn! Those were the first words that came to my mind after I saw John Kelly's incredibly colorful line of outdoor furniture. Seriously, those colors are out of control. In a good way, of course. If you're not afraid to flaunt a few bold hues, consider the Rho Lounge Chair and/or Loveseat: available in 10 fabric options with an equal number of colorful mix and match frames. The Rho Collection also includes an ottoman, dining chair, tray table, and dining table.

Rho Collection by John Kelly available from 2Modern: $390 - $1305

Animal Rubber bands

Just after Capree's post about creative paperclips, I got an email from a blog I used to post on called Charles and Marie. Today they are selling animal rubber bands. Who knew that was even an option? I'm going to be yawning at normal paper clips and rubber bands for the rest of my life now. Thanks a lot.

Animal Rubber bands $8 from Charles and Marie.

Or if you missed the "sale" check out Sillybandz.com for a variety of creative rubber bands for $5.

DIY Help: Painting Kitchen Cabinets

Alright, folks. Here's the skinny. We're getting ready to get down with a kitchen makeover. Notice I did not say "renovation" or "remodel"; just a face lift (so don't get too excited)! New kitchen cabinets, though immensely appealing, are not in our budget. We've settled on a simple, white paint job to spruce them up, but I need your help! As avid DIYers, I'm counting on you for some tried and true tips.

Have any of you tackled a kitchen cabinet painting project before? Do you have tips for keeping track of which door goes to which cabinet? Specific products you'd recommend? Dos and don'ts? Please share your wisdom! I'm all ears.

(For your help, I offer you some modern kitchen eye candy. Sorry, that's all I have.)

Carafe + Tumblers by Arian Brekveld

We've been big on carafes here lately, which is probably due to the fact that summer is a ragin' and it's SO HOT EVERYWHERE. So forgive our one track minds; all we can think about is quenching our thirst. And why not quench it with a sexy carafe like this one by Arian Brekveld? This double-walled, stainless steel number is sleek and minimal. Melamine tumblers stack perfectly with one acting as a simple lid. Cool. (Though, a bit on the pricey side.)

Carafe + Tumblers set by Arian Brekveld: $89

Wire by Areaware

This new coat rack / wall hook from Areaware was inspired by the iconic wire hanger (hence the name), though it reminds me more of a paperclip. Whatever it makes you think of, there's no denying its versatility: from magazines to jackets it's a pretty functional store-all! Available in chrome-plated steel or white powder-coated steel. Currently available for pre-order; ships September 10th.

Wire by Areaware: $49
