NineteenSeventyThree

1973.png

NineteenSeventyThree is a UK-based design company specializing in paper goods. Husband and wife team James and Emma Emmerson started the company based on the desire to explore their own creativity. Aside from their own work, they also commission artists from around the world to design cards, wallpaper, and gift wrap. I really love the retro-look of the Claudette series, which is available in greeting card, postcard, and notebook form. As an added bonus, all their products are made from recycled materials and they only ever print with vegetable based inks. Oh, plus their cellophane bags are compostable and biodegradable! Talk about a product you can feel good about!

Tiny Showcase

Tiny1.png

There are some really great pieces available right now on Tiny Showcase. I'm rather fond of Caroline Hwang and Mike Bertino's work. But what I'd really love to get my hands on is the 10 Beasts! box set.

Each of the ten images in this editioned box set was created by a Beasts! contributor specifacally for the set and pressed by letterpress artist Dan Wood. The print collection is housed in a hand-crafted portfolio box created by If'n Books + Marks with a two-color glow-in-the-dark jacket design by Beasts! designer Jacob Covey. Each of the one hundred box sets contains ten letterpress prints printed on 100% cotton Somerset Velvet paper. Measuring 7" square, the prints are larger than a normal Tiny Showcase print and come blind debossed with the artist's name and the edition number. Each portfolio box is hand numbered to match the debossed numbering on the artwork it contains.

Sigh. That sounds AMAZING. Tiny2.png

About Tiny Showcase:

Tiny Showcase was created by Jon Buonaccorsi and Shea'la Finch in November of 2004. Each week we pick a new piece of tiny artwork and turn the work into a limited-run print production. Each run is printed on archival Hahnemühle German Printmaking Paper. The archival ink is specially treated and sprayed, giving it an archival lifespan of over 60 years. You sort of need to see the end product to get the full effect, but each piece really is a beautiful specimen.

Limited-Edition Prints available from Tiny Showcase - Starting at $8.

P.S. If you aren't familiar with the Beasts! project/books, check them out on Fantagraphics (here and here). I was lucky enough to get them for my birthday this last year!

200905060746.jpg

For some reason good quality letterpress never gets old to me. 12fifteen is run by German born Johanna Anderes who now resides in Connecticut after spending some time in Switzerland and South Africa. 12fifteen has a great collection of coasters and notecards all of which are quite affordable.

Available on the 12fifteen Etsy page from $12 - $18.

NEW from Ork Posters

Heart.png

You may remember those sweet neighborhood screen prints from Ork Posters we wrote about a while ago. Looks like they're branching out from the city-theme and trying something a little more scientific.  The Heart print features the same bold use of typography but instead of well-known neighborhoods, identifies all the parts of the heart. I hope they take this new anatomy theme and run with it - could be a very cool series!

Urban Soule

Soule.png

I ran across this Etsy shop a while ago but just rediscovered it in my bookmarks.  Urban Soule sells really awesome urban-themed ceramics (as well as paintings, photography, and vintage items). I really love the wood grain plates and the graffiti stencil pieces are pretty rad too. You can order anything from a single plate to an entire 18-piece set. Soule even offers customized pitchers and teapots, just choose the style and color you want!

More about Soule:
Soule,(pronounced like soul) was born in Warshin'ton state. Growing up in the sticks, I, me and my only friends were tree dwelling creatures. One day me,myself and I became incredibly lost and stumbled upon the "city" and discovered a wheat pasted poster. Not only visually appealing, it was delicious,me loved it. I and myself had to learn more about this new discovery, so after befriending some city folk, I, myself and me branched out on our own armed with spray paint, stencils and ink. At the ripe ol' age of 16 I had my first art show which was a success, this got the ball rolling so Me, myself and I ran with it bringing myself to Seattle, WA. Keep an eye out for Urban Soule clothing, paintings, toys, and whatever else me, myself and I feels like making!

Ceramics with attitude from Urban Soule: $10 - $250.

Mikey Burton

Mikey1.png

Really awesome graphic design/illustration/letterpress from one-man show Mikey Burton. It was really, really hard to pick what to feature, as everything this guy creates is pure genius. I absolutely love the Carol and John's logo as well as the reinterpretations of classic book covers that Burton created for his thesis project. Check out his website for more eye candy and stop by his Big Cartel shop to pick up your own "Live With Art" letterpress print for only $20!

Bottom: Anonymous call Cerf The Puti Tree N0.3 La gourmandise des oiseaux

My wife and I were discussing the other day how we have a serious lack of good art on our walls. We are currently in the middle of remodeling a room for our son Arrington (more on that later) and I would love to get some nice prints for his room. I came across this great french site L' Affiche Moderne (Modern Displays) that sells children's art with amazing artists like Limoon, Young Nod and Marion Billet as well as some nice photography prints. Each poster is a numbered limited edition of 300. They ship worldwide and have pretty reasonable prices for a good sized poster.

Available from L' Affiche Moderne from $35 - $75.

Josh Cochran

Cochran1.png

I only recently discovered Josh Cochran and his awesome illustration style via The Criterion Collection. He has designed one of my favorite Criterion covers ever for the movie Wise Blood, which will be released this May. While designing for The Criterion Collection is probably the pinnacle of some illustrator's dreams, Josh's client list is vast and impressive. Cochran2.png

With such a great style, it's no wonder the likes of Fantagraphics, Wired, GQ, and Target are commissioning his skills. Lucky for us, Josh has an online shop where you can purchase prints of his illustrations. To see more, check out his website www.joshcochran.net.

Jill Dryer

JillDryer.png

Some of you may have heard of Jill Dryer already, but for those of you who haven't, well.. Here you go!

Following a 15 year career in marketing (and 7 years at Architectural Digest), Jill decided to finally do what she loved: painting. Her "Design Meets Nature" series has received loads of attention and she has gone on to write and illustrate a children's book, provide Imagination workshops for parents and kids, and even started an Etsy shop to sell her wonderful creations.

I can't get enough of her paintings! So imaginative and full of humor! My favorite piece is the "Calderooster". If you could pick any painting to add to your own collection, which one would you choose?

Originals for sale from jdryerart.com from $650 - $1200.

Prints for sale on Etsy from $20 - $35.

Please Be Still

ModernDeck.png

I ran across these great illustrations from Etsy shop Please Be Still and had to share! Illustrator Jen Renninger came up with the idea for her "Modern Design Deck" cards originally as a way to get out of a creative funk. Prodded by her husband to draw his favorite chair, Jen went on to create 30 of these deck cards inspired by modern designs. From Aalto to Zeisel, she's got it covered! So whether you're looking for your favorite chair or your favorite letter, I think you'll find something to make you smile. And for those prone to indecision, there is even a poster featuring all 30 illustrations!

Modern Design Deck series prints from Please Be Still from $25 - $75.

Yellena James

Yellena.png

One of my favorite artists on Etsy is Portland-based illustrator Yellena James. Originally from Sarajevo, Yellena journeyed to the U.S. and received a BA in graphic design from the University of Central Florida. Her illustrations are incredibly vibrant layers of organic shapes, lines, and textures that feel otherworldly and cerebral - like something from a familiar dream. I could stare at her work for hours! She has a pretty incredible story as well, which you can read about here. I don't know about you, but I would love to have her work on my walls!

Archival prints from Yellena James from $10 - $40.

Ork Posters

ORK.png

Here's one for the Eco camp! These screen prints by Ork Posters are made from 100% recycled paper and are printed with soy based inks. On top of that, should you actually reside in the same city as the print you're purchasing, you can opt for local pick up (to reduce the carbon footprint of your transaction, of course). So, pick up some green art to hang over that low-VOC paint of yours!

If that doesn't persuade you, perhaps your love of typography will. These clever prints make bold use of typography to illustrate all the lovely neighborhoods of your favorite city. Current prints include Boston, Brooklyn, Chicago, Great Lakes, Los Angeles, Manhattan, NYC, Philadelphia, Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto, and Washington DC.

I'm crossing my fingers for a Salt Lake City version. Hey, a girl can dream.

Earth-friendly prints, with a healthy dose of graphic design and urban appeal, by Ork Postsers from $20 - $27.
