Vintage Cushion Covers

All Images B Bcf 35A Il 430Xn.20300710Katrina Kaye knows vintage. She has been making wonderful handmade bags out of vintage material and army bags for some time now. I am lucky enough to have one of her bags, and I use it every day. Not only is it a truly unique bag, but the quality is great too. With that in mind when I noticed that Katrina has cushion covers too, I knew I had to share. For those of you looking for some true vintage cushions with some great colors and textures, look no further. Katrina has a great rotating selection of colors and patters, each one better than the last. Best of all, you can have your very own, straight from Amsterdam for only $25. Sparkability Nurseryworks Sale

200802210702While we absolutely love our Nurseryworks Storytime Rocker and Arial Crib, we will be the first ones to admit that some ot their stuff isn't the most affordable. It has been extremely durable however, and we still think its a good purchase, especially if you can find it on sale. Sparkability is having a big sale with 40% of many of their nurseryworks items. That makes the rocker shown above $480 instead of $800. The 3 wide dresser and 2 wide changing table are for sale, but additional shipping costs almost make it a wash. The best thing about the sale is they actually have a decent selection of colors left, so if you've been debating whether to get a quality rocker, now's your chance. On Sale at Sparkability for $480.

New Oxo Trashcan

Oa Media Hotmedia Oxo Imagesprod 1334203 3A 1Kitchen trash cans aren't cheap. While your best bet for something inexpensive is to get a small one and keep it under the counters, some of us don't have the luxury of having that extra space. If your trash can has to be out where everyone can see it, it makes sense to invest a little in one that looks good. This new 10 gallon trash can from Oxo looks great in white, and has a soft touch opening lid (no more banging around as you step on the foot pedal). It has a narrow footprint so it can easily fit into a tight spot. My favorite feature of all is it is designed so that you don't see the bag hanging out. Available from Oxo for $119.

New Ikea Items

200802130734With spring just around the corner, it means that one of our favorite affordable modern stores Ikea is scheduled to have some new products coming out. I was lucky enough to get a sneak preview of some of the goods so I though I would share them with our readers. This KNUBBIG table lamp was designed by Japanese designer Michiko Nakato and promises to be some great inexpensive lighting. It comes in 5 different colors (flower pink, butterfly green, cherry blossoms/ frosted white, black, and butterfly turquoise) and two different sizes (approx 4.75" and 8.25"). Stay tuned for more new goodies!

Costco Convertible Stool

Images Content Productlarge 246168LlApril, one of our great GRM readers sent me this link last week. Its for a convetible stool from Costco. The convertible part is the fact that you can throw some castors and a tray on it and use it as a shop stool. Personally I like it just the way it is is. It has a great retro/industrial look to it. The 304 stainless steel seat and crome legs are built to be shop tough, so they will last forever in your home. It is also pneumatically adjustable from 25" to 30" which makes it much easier to get just the right height for your countertop. Best of all is that you get all this great stuff for only $39. You gotta love Costco.

Avialable from Costco for $39.

Modern DIY Projects

Uimages Ny 1-30-Moddi-2I have been coming across a bunch of good DIY projects online lately, and I thought that I would share some of the recent ones I have found. The most impressive of them all is this Ikea hack by the folks at Moddi. It uses some off the shelf pieces as well as some Ikea goodies, and the result is a great looking murphy bed for under $200. You can buy the plans from Moddi for $8, and with a little elbow grease have your very own affordable modern murphy bed. Plans available at Moddi for $8. Pictures Sh4105A If your not feeling quite that ambitious, you could always tackle a smaller job, like this DIY stuffed animal. This little kit comes with two hand screened pieces of canvas. All you have to do is follow the instructions, cut them out, sew them up and stuff them. It would be a nice and easy little project, and you have to admit that Claus is one of the cutest racoons you've ever seen. Available at Egg Press for $26 Wp-Content Uploads Process2 If you don't have a kid to make a stuffed animal for, or just aren't into that thing, you could always treat your laptop to it's own little felt cozy. Grace over at Design Sponge has posted a great little how to on making your very own laptop cozy. This one is even easier because there is absolutely no sewing involved. The end result is a very nice looking protective sleeve for your laptop. Full instructions at Design Sponge

Cardboard Play Kitchen

All Images 8 823 81E Il 430Xn.18188815I happen to think that cardboard is one of the best materials for kids toys. Whether it is just a big old cardboard box and a lot of imagination, or you get a little more creative and build your own modern cardboard playhouse. If you have ever had the hankering to build something more elaborate, but were looking for a little direction, here is your chance. Fortytworoads Etsy shop has plans for building your very own cardboard kitchen. This fairly full featured little guy can be easily made out of a couple of cardboard boxes and some other spare goodies you have laying around your house. The end result is really quite impressive. Plans available from Fortytworoads Etsy shop for $7.

Tubelor Trashcan

Images Molla Product TblrFinding a good trash can isn't always easy. We have a nice stainless steel Simple Human one with a flip top lid. Overall we are pretty pleased with it, the only thing is that when you put a trash bag in it you can see it hanging out a little bit below the lid. These Tubelor Trashcans from Molla Space take care of that. You place your bag in the inner trash can and then it gets all covered up by the outer tube. Available in six different colors, they are sure to have something to match your decor. At only 12" high, I wish that they made a bigger size...Available from Molla Space for $41.

Todays Overstock Finds

Overstock usually has some pretty good stuff at great prices. You may not find the coolest modern pieces, but you can usually find some good clean designs if you look hard enough. Here are a couple I found today: Images Products L1063574I really just like this adjustable drawing table because it reminds me of my dads old drafting table. I remember for a while he was spending all his nights sitting in front of it cramming for his architectural exams. This one may not be a full on drafting table, but it does have a nice maple top and a simple design. Plus did I mention it is only $109? Available for $109 at Overstock.com

Images Products L10302784I admit that I am not really a huge fan of acrylic side tables, or acrylic anything for that matter. These however are a great deal, if your into that sort of thing. For $140 you get three nesting acrylic side tables. According to Overstock "The contemporary, versatile design of this set of three Acrylic Nesting Coffee Tables is sure to impress in your home or office. " Impressed? I am by the price. Available from Overstock for $140

Images Products L11124011This couch is kinda like the acrylic side tables in my mind. I'm not hugely impressed by the design, but it is clean looking, and very affordable. The Kennedy sofa has none of the extra tufts and swooping lines that can ruin a couches look. It does have microsuede which is incredibly easy to clean up after. Best of all it's only $499. Really for that price it's a whole lot of couch. Available from overstock for $499

Images Products L10761177Last but not least is this student desk. I like the soft green mint color, and the well balanced proportions. They were even able to slip a couple of drawers in there which makes it not only good looking, but functional as well. The high gloss finish should make cleaning easy. Don't think that just because it's called the student desk it needs to be covered with textbooks. This would look perfectly at home in any living room. Once again one of the best things is the price, $149. Available from Overstock for $149.

DIY Candle Holder?

200801230727I often come across nice looking products online only to be shocked by the price. While the $45 that they are asking for this candle holder isn't outrageous, I can't ever imagine myself spending that kind of money on it. Looking at it though, I can see that this same idea would lend itself very well to a DIY approach. All it would take is a scrap of wood from Home Depot, or even an old cutting board from a thrift store, a hole saw, and some dark stain. Not only could you save some money, but it could be a fun project too. For those looking to go the easy route, you can buy it at Hip and Zen for $45.

Dwell studio comes to Target

Uimages Ny 1-17-Baby-Dwell-2This may be old news to some, but it looks like Dwell Studio is releasing a complete line of bedding, kitchen accessories and baby goods at Target soon. While I was excited about all of these different lines, I was most impressed with the pricing on the baby stuff. I'm not sure if the crib shown is Dwell or not, but Apartment Therapy lists pricing for the Soho Crib ($290), Olivia Crib Set ($80), and Olivia Blanket ($15). That gives you that whole set up for well under $400 including the crib! That seems like a great value for any new parent looking for a crib. The should be available on Target online by the 28th, but some people are reporting that their local target already has some items. More pics of the other lines after the jump.Check out AT and sister sites for the full scoop: Baby Collection Bedding Kitchen and Tabletop Uimages Ny 1-17-Dwell-Target-5 Uimages Ny 1-17-Kitchen-Dwell-4

Portland End Table

200801160724I've always been a fan of Mid-Century Modern design. It was the classic designs of Charles and Ray Eames that made me fall in love. This Portland End Table by Adesso has a great MCM design to it. At $135 and free shipping the price is right too. It says that it is made of "MDF bentwood with walnut wood veneer" which leaves me a little nervous about the quality. Not that veneered MDF can't be bad, I guess I've just never heard of anyone using bentwood MDF. Anyone have experience with Adesso products? Available from Target Decor (a design store in NYC, not to be confused with the chain Target) for $135.

Greene Daybed

Dsc 0023-7With our new Ikea couch in our living room we had only one more wall where we wanted some good seating. Our challenge was it had a low window right in the middle of the wall so a sofa was pretty much out of the question. We ended up going with this nice white Greene Daybed from Exclusively Home. It has a great classic look to it with the tufted leatherette and the Chrome legs. The price was quite reasonable at only $825. Shipping was free and it includes a 5 year furniture protection plan, whatever that is. Available from Exclusively Home for $825. Dsc 0024-10 Dsc 0025-10

Brisk Brew Coffee Maker

200801100729While I'm not personally a huge fan of coffee, there are those that can't go a day without their fix. For those of you that are on the road a lot, there is a small travel coffee maker that looks as good as your favorite cup of brew tastes. The Brisk Brew has an simple chunky design, but only stands 5" tall and 4" wide. It has a permanent mesh filter and is dual voltage (120V/ 140V) in case travels take you out of country. The only disadvantage I can see is that it only brews one 8 ounce cup at a time. Available from Organize.com for $44.

Wooden Kids Toys

200801080731I love wooden kids toys. They just seem so much better than all the plastic ones that you find in the stores these days. The problem is, they aren't as easy to find, and are sometimes a lot more expensive. My wife found a couple of great websites that have a good selection of affordable wooden kids toys. Show to the left is the Haba Ballino Grabbing Wooden Toy from nurturecenter.com. It is a simple yet stylish toy, and best of all it's only $10.Available from Nurturecenter.com for $10 Check out Brightoctober.com for more wooden toys.

48 - DIY lighting

Image 48 005I came across this post over at Tree Hugger a couple of days ago, and have been thinking about it since. From the three person design group 101 comes this great looking lamp made from old wire cloths hangers and a compact florescent bulb. Of course it's not really presented as a DIY project so there are no instructions, but with a little trial and error I'm sure you could figure it out. Upon closer inspection of the picture, it looks like it is all held together by two acrylic discs. I would love to see some pics of someone trying to recreate this. Any takers? Check out 101 Design Studio for more pics.

Boon Squirt

Dsc 0061-8I mentioned a while ago that Boon had come out with several new products. We have been testing out the Squirt for the past month or so, and we love it. The Squirt, or Boon spoon as we call it, is a baby food dispensing spoon. The orange part screws off, and you can fill it full of non chunky baby food. It can hold up to 3 ounces of baby food, and all you have to do is give it a little squeeze to fill the spoon up. Arrington was enjoying some pears in this picture. The only thing we have found is that you have to give it a little tilt down while you squeeze or you will spray your kid in the face. Cleanup is easy as it is dishwasher safe. The Squirt is available directly from Boon for $8.

Making a Concrete Ofuro

200712280722When we were first looking into making an ofuro, one of the things we considered was pouring one out of concrete. The good thing about concrete is that the material is cheap, and with a little hard work it lends itself well to the DIY approach. We quickly bagged the idea because there is no possible way our floor could support the weight. This morning I stumbled across an old post on Apartment Therapy with a gorgeous DIY bathroom built for under 3k which includes a concrete ofuro. The soaking tub only cost about $200 according to the owner splat girl. She did mention that it was a lot of work though. Check out her flicker photo set and the Apartment Therapy post.

CB2 Sale

200712270709With all the post holiday sales starting up it's a great time to get online and do some shopping. CB2 currently has things up to 50% off. I noticed all of their Christmas ornaments are about half off, so if there is something you wish you would have gotten for your tree, here is your chance. 200712270712 They also have quite a bit of furniture on sale like this Track Sofa for only $799. Thats a pretty great looking sofa for a reasonable price. The Peekaboo Spark Bunching Table is another great deal at 50% off. The thick molded acrylic side table has black graphic bursts underprinted on the sides to add a nice touch to the simple design. More sales at CB2.

Rosa Loves

Img Products Rosaheart 01I received a lot of great gifts this year, but perhaps the one that captures the Christmas spirit the best was this shirt from Rosaloves.com. If you haven't heard of Rosa Loves before, you should definitely check it out. Not only do they have some great designs printed on American Apparel t-shirts, but by buying a shirt from them, you are actually doing some good. The idea behind Rosa Loves is that everyone has a story. They find someone who is in need for whatever reason, design a shirt for them, and then donate all the proceeds of that shirt to support and help them. So in a way it really is a gift that keeps on giving. Fitted Tee's are $25 and proceeds always go to a good cause.
