I just can't get enough of this paired down simple modern craftsman aesthetic lately. The Moxo Stool is a simple Ipe stool made in Brazil. It's part of the Caboclas Project, which in and of itself is pretty cool.
The Caboclas Project is an innovative forest management project launched in 2000 with the support of leading Brazilian environmental agencies. It allows members to remain in their communities by providing an alternative income source through traditional woodworking while employing sustainable practices. Comprised of nearly 300 families, artisan members work in communal areas with simple hand tools. Their furniture and other handcrafted wood pieces reflect the rich folk culture and traditions of communities in the Tapajós region. The group's popular animal carvings illustrate these influences. The group uses wood from managed forests as well as reclaimed and dead trees.
I wish I lived somewhere where I could run a MCM rental business. Alas I don't. Instead I'll just keep watching this video of two cute people living the dream. Thanks Benni for the tip!
Holy MCM goodness! I recently discovered Thrive Furniture and I'm totally blown away with all the great original mid century modern furniture they have for a reasonably affordable price. To make things even sweeter, the Nixon Love seat (top) is currently on sale for $1,349 and the Fillmore (bottom) is only $1039. They appear to have a good selection of upholstery too, including leather. Does anyone have any experience with the quality?
The trestle leg is a classic design that always looks fresh. The Morton table takes that look and offers it in a white, oak, or dark ash leg coupled with a simple glass top.
It may be entirely too early to start thinking about outdoor furniture, but a boy can dream of warm or warm summer days spent on backyard patios right? Despite it's slightly awkward shape, there is some sort of irresistible charm to the MAYA chair. The brightly painted expanded metal is the perfect material to hold up to the summertime elements, and stay looking new.

I always love Thomas Paul's whimsical modern folk style. Typically I associate him with either pillows or tableware, but I'm absolutely in love with some of his recent duvet covers. From elephant to octopi to nautical ships, they are all killing it. If you are into the sea theme you should definitely check out his Lava Anchor pillows too. Ahoy!
My Stepfather was a photographer when I was growing up, and consequently I spent a good deal of time in the darkroom of our local newspaper. They had these fantastic glow in the dark timers to keep track of film processing (ohh the good old days) that looked exactly like this one from Kikkerland. While this one seemingly lacks glowing parts, it is magnetic which makes it easy to stick on your fridge, and it's only 1" thin.
As a bit of a fan of architecture I already feel like I am constantly annoying my friends with useless facts about "famous" architects that lived in the golden age of modernism. You can imagine how excited I am to now be able to annoy them and assert myself as the ultimate geek by playing The Modern Architecture Game. Bwaahaaahaaa. Game night anyone?
I love these simple industrial/vintage looking bookshelves. The material pallet is simple and straight forward, as is the construction. Blake Avenue seems to have hit the nail firmly on the head, although the $1,150 price tag does seem a little on the high side. That being said the rest of his Etsy shop is full of great looking custom furniture that falls in the same industrial/vintage vein, and I'm always a fan of paying a little more for a truly custom piece.
What do you think about the price? To high? To Low? Just right?
I've been playing around with some pendant light with cloth cord ideas lately, so I'm thoroughly obsessed with ingenious and simple pendant solutions. The Laboratorio pendant uses a vintage borosilicate lab flask and combines it with a brass lamp socket and some cloth cord. The end result is clean and modern, with just a hint of vintage. The Castiglioni designed switch is a nice touch.
OK, I fully admit it. It's pretty easy to get my attention. I'm sort of like a bird that's drawn to shiny things, except instead of shinny things I like wooden things with bold colors painted on them. So yes, I would like this Cross Paddle from Atelier 688 thank you very much.
While I like the rough vintage look of the classic mechanics light, or a simple bright cloth lamp pendant, the sleek minimalist style of this Work Lamp from the future perfect does have its place. The Work Lamp comes complete with dimmer and bulb.
A winter cold has had me feeling kind of down lately, and I've been hitting the hot drinks hard. I wish I had something as pretty as this to tote them around with though. Made from glass, stainless steel, and wood the Therm-O Terra keeps beverages hot or cold all while looking amazing.
Very Good and Proper has been doing some quality work lately, and I'm glad to see that they are getting the much deserved credit for it. The Harbour Chair shown above was recently nominated for a Design Museum Design of the Year Award. Made of powder coated metal tubing and CNC shaped ash this simple attractive chair deserves all the credit it gets.
Valentines is just around the corner and you know you can do better than flowers or chocolates. Nothing says love like a scandinavian inspired pillow by Jane Foster.
I've been seeing a lot of nice origami lamp shades lately like this one by Emma Johansson on Coroflot, and I wondered how hard it would be to make a DIY version of the shade. According to the video below, it's totally doable, and I have a big gold star for the first reader that pulls it off.
Hot on the heels of yesterdays amazing stool from Hedgehouse comes another fantastic hand crafted stool this time from Gabor Ruzsan of Garny Designs. Made of hand carved cherry wood the 22" tall stool is as functional as it is beautiful. As with all good furniture the real beauty is in the subtle details. My favorite on this stool is the barely perceptible walnut wedge used in the mortise and tenon joint. Top notch.
Please officially add this to my "want" list. I'm totally lusting over these beautifully designed and made walnut stools from Hedgehouse. This is definitely one of the pieces of furniture that qualifies as not cheap, but absolutely worth every penny.
Coffee. Sweet nectar of the gods. There is nothing like a proper cup to get you out of bed in the morning. While I typically rotate between my new white ceramic french press, and the Chemex that my girlfriend got me, I do like a good pour over. I even have a clever dripper that I use from time to time (thanks Mom!). Honestly I like the simplicity of all the previously mentioned items, especially with my bodum kettle. If you are looking for an all in one pour over machine however, check out this new one from Bodum. Attractive, compact, and it has an insulated container. The $250 price tag hurts quite a bit, but at least it comes with a reusable filter.
