Atomic Indy + Rejuenation = Free

200907300739.jpg

If you are lucky enough to be restoring a mid century modern home you know the frustration of trying to source some of the things that like original lighting and drawer pulls. My good friend Baz over at Atomic Indy recently went through such an endeavor and happily stumbled across Rejuvenation, an online store that focuses on "classic american lighting and hardware". To share his excitement he is giving away $300 of goodies to rejuvenation. All you have to do is leave a comment on his site about what you would get with it. Believe me, the odds of winning are WAY better than Vegas and the prize much better. I actually received a sample of drawer pulls a while ago and I can vouch for the quality of them.

Head over to Atomic Indy for all the details, and let us know if you win!

The Big Boy Room

Th Big Boy Room from Creede on Vimeo.

With the birth of our daughter two months ago, we needed to move our 2 year old out of the nursery and into his own "big boy room" downstairs. We decided to have a little fun with the room and had my good friend Tony paint a mural of "Where the Wild Things Are" on the wall. We finished it off by gluing down some Flor carpet tiles. The "video" is really a series of photographs, one taken every 30 seconds and played back at 24 photo's a second. A total of 6,357 photo's were taken, representing over 54 hours of work. A huge thank you goes out to Tony who did an amazing job. The video doesn't really do the mural justice. You can see some close up pictures of the mural on my flicker account.

Valentine House

Valentine1.png

I'm so happy Dwell has all their featured homes archived on their site. It's fun to go back and look at all the amazing projects over the years and to see some you may have missed. Here's an oldie, but a goody, from the Oct/Nov 2004 issue. I love the airy feeling and all the pops of color in the Valentine House by Singe Speed Design. Enjoy all the photos here and then read the original article for more info!

Stardust Glass

Stardust.png

Check out these eco-friendly glass tiles from Stardust Glass! Each tile is handcrafted from 87-97% recycled glass content. Formed from molds instead of machine pressed, each tile is unique, providing a more personal look and style.

About Stardust Glass:

We are dedicated to reducing our environmental impact through use of recycled pre-consumer scrap glass, typically headed for the landfill, and through our commitment to using recyclable materials for product packing and shipping. In addition, we use a kiln to fuse our glass tiles, rather than a furnace, which uses more energy and produces harmful emissions.

We have established and continue to develop our reputation for artistic and innovative, hand-crafted recycled glass tiles, sold at a competitive price for use in the home-improvement and green building industries. We are proud to treat customers and the community with a reputation of professionalism, expertise and environmental consciousness.

Enhabiten

Enhabit.png

I will never, ever, ever get over the amount of talent that is bursting out of Etsy. It blows my mind, really. With so many incredible shops, it's sometimes hard to pick who or what to feature! This time around, though, the handmade pillows by Liane of Enhabiten were an obvious choice. Aside from the great design and craftsmanship, I was really impressed with her earth friendly efforts - all materials used are organic, sustainably grown and/or vintage.

Pillows by Enhabiten: $30 - $75

Flock Mobile

Flock.png

I've always had a thing for mobiles. I love the subtle energy they bring to a room and enjoy watching their slow, graceful movements. Maybe that means I'm just a baby in an adult's body, but that's okay! It would help explain my obsession with this mobile from Bookhou. The Flock Mobile is made from hand laminated maple veneer cut into the shape of abstract birds. Each bird is a different shape and size. Perfect for real babies or adult babies alike.

Flock Mobile from Bookhou - $160

Jory in the paper

200907160718.jpg I wanted to give a big congratulation to my friend Jory (pictured above) for having his house featured in the local newspaper the Deseret News. The article ran last Sunday and was about buying vintage furnishings instead of buying new. They included two wonderful pictures of Jory's pad as well as a story of his first MCM purchase, a tulip table and chairs for $100. Jory even got a plug in for my favorite local MCM store The Green Ant.

Besides having good taste in furniture Jory happens to be an amazing graphic designer. He also has a sweet blog over at Utahmodern.org about graphic design.

Fung + Blatt Architects

Rome1.png

I ran across Fung + Blatt while I was off foraging for some eye candies. I dare say I hit the jackpot! While their whole portfolio is impressive, I was struck particularly by the Rome Residence in Los Angeles. A few of my favorite features are the slatted staircase and fully tiled bathroom!

About the Rome Residence:

Sited on a gentle swath of land, Rome deploys simple forms to create a dynamic of relationships between interior and exterior spaces. The L- shaped house, together with its carport and connecting retaining walls, form an S around two informal courts. The sequence begins at the arrival court, ascends between a pair of concrete walls, and skirts a private court to reach the main level. At the lower level, bedrooms focus onto a private court that is centered on a Brazilian pepper tree. A studio steps down and opens to a front patio veiled by a California pepper.

Rome2.png

The upper level living space stretches from a cantilevered deck with city views to a family/dining area that extends out to a pine-shaded patio, future pool and gentle hill. An open kitchen and a core of cabinetry around the stair tower punctuate this spatial continuum as it turns the turn to the master bedroom wing. Further up the stair; a library over looks the family area and opens to a viewing deck of its own. The three-story stair tower serves as a ‘thermal chimney’ and impart natural light deep into the interior, and along with clerestories at the mono-slope roofs, enables convective cooling throughout the house.

Rome’s relationship to the land, thoughtful assignment and sequence of spaces proves that spaciousness and livability is qualitatively conceived rather than quantitatively measured.

Iousen Pot

200907150750.jpg

Just under a year ago I blogged about a gorgeous water pitcher that DWR had just gotten. I have been in love with the look of it and finally got around to getting my own, although not from DWR. This iousen pot came to me from Merae and I have been putting it through it's paces for the last couple of weeks. From a visual standpoint it certainly doesn't fail to impress. I was a little curious to find out how the whole filtration part actually worked. It really doesn't seem to "filter" in the sense that the water has to pass through anything. The Iouseki stones and Binchotan charcoal are just suspended in the water. According to Merae;

The stones come from the mountains in Kanazawa, the capital city of Ishikawa Prefecture, on the Sea of Japan coast. The charcoal is specially prepared for potable water use, and also works as a deodorizer to create odor-free water.

I can attest to the great taste of the water. It has a fairly strong mineral taste to it that I actually really like. My wife thinks it's a little too strong. We all agree that it looks great.

Available from Merae for $82

store images 001.jpg SLC local store Modern Materials Design has gone through a lot of changes over the years. They started out as a brick and mortar store in Sugarhouse, then moved down the road on highland, and eventually closed shop to go online only. Over the last year they have had some great warehouse sales, and in the past couple months they even opened up another retail location in the Brickyard area. Unfortunately things aren't working out for them there and they are closing up shop, which means a huge sale. There are ton's of great deals to be had so go check it out before they are gone again. Echo Bench by Design Lab Workshop

Picture 1.png

I love this clever twist by Design Lab Workshop on the classic George Nelson bench!

The Echo bench is actually formed by two distinct pieces which, when combined, create an undulating surface with multiple seat heights for users. One bench undulates between 11” and 15”, with the low seat intended for kids to enjoy. The other bench undulates between 15” and 18”, with the high seat providing a better height for tall users. The benches can also be utilized as decorative furniture; users can highlight objects by placing them on the higher or lower sections of the bench.

The Echo Bench by Design Lab Workshop - $450

P.S. Also check out their other furniture, including the Echo Screen and Pixel Bench - very cool!
