Every once in a while you come across a great deal, and you don't even know how good it is until later. Last week I was at Beyond Ordinary checking out what cool things they had, when I noticed this very clean modern chair. I meandered over there and looked at the price (that always determines if I love it or not) and was surprised that it was only $250 on sale. Not a bad price I thought. I noted the name "Nixon Chair" and figured I would go home and do some research and see if I could find a better price. Here's what I found. The Nixon Chair is designed by the Canadian based Gus Design Group, which puts out some high quality nice furniture. Normal pricing for the chair is closer to $490, which means it is a total steal at Beyond Ordinary. Unfortunately they don't really have a web presence, so this great deal only goes for us Utah modernists.
Jonathan Adler is no secret in the modern contemporary scene. Starting off in ceramics, he is a shining example of effective branding. He has been able to make a name for himself and branch out into all areas of modern interior decorating. His successful branding and passion for mid-century modern design has helped to bring good modern design to the masses. His stuff can be found at major stores like Bed Bath and Beyond and Target. The prices aren't bad either. Take the 16 Piece dinnerware set to the right. You can get all that goodness for under $80. Not to shabby.
Available at Utilitieshome for $79.
It seems that there is a positive trend with city dwellers to ditch the old SUV and get out the trusty old bike. Its an idea that helps both the environment and the wallet (especially with crude oil at a record high). Well if you live in a small pad like my wife and I do, then you know that finding a place for the bike to stay in the house can be less than simple. Luckily for us, cycloc is just that, simple. This cone shaped hanger is just the thing to hang your old metal stead on. Designed and produced in Britain, this award winning hanger comes in orange, white, green or 100% recycled plastic black.
Available from Cycloc for £49.95.

Last week I featured the 4412 zen floor lamp from Under The Roof. This week were coming back strong with some more great deals from them. The Savannah Bedroom set includes a sleek black contemporary platform bed, an extra wide headboard, two side tables, and a double dresser with mirror. Thats basically all you need to go from no style to chic style for just over $1,400. Seems like a good deal to me. Oh and did I mention that shipping is free? Of course I admit that $1,400 is a lot of quid to drop on something you have never seen in person, so someone in VA go check it out in the store an let us know how the quality is.
Available from Under the Roof for $1,427
I don't know what rock I was hiding under to miss the fact that on of my favorite companies Blu Dot is now making great sheet metal accessories like this 2D:3D coat rack. Leave it up to old Charlie Lazer to bring his funky style to metal with a collection of flat packed, brightly colored accessories. Besides the 2D:3D coat rack, they also have a nice magazine holder, letter holder, and various other metal trays for holding all your goodies. They all come flat, and all you have to do is bend along the perforations and presto, you have gone from 2D to 3D. Pretty clever, and very affordable. Best pricing I have found is over at Design Public (love those guys).
Available from Design Public for $55.

Here is one I couldn't help but pass along from Better Living Through Design:
This is a pretty amazing sale on a leather lounge chair. The only thing to be aware of is that it arrives disassembled and you assemble it yourself.

They even have a red one for $179. Way to go overstock!
Thanks BLTD!

Good affordable floor lamps are hard to find, especially anything that involves teak. If you are into the whole Asian inspired modern look then the 4412 Zen Floor Lamp from Under the Roof is worth checking out. It stands 50" tall and about 10" wide, so its no shrimp. The frame is made of teak, and the lamp shades are pvc panels, which is a decent way to get the frosted glass look. It includes a foot step switch, and is only $79. Not a bad deal at all. If you want to avoid shipping charges, well then I hope you live in Virginia where their brick and mortar is.
Available from Under the Roof for $79
Starting the week off with a good affordable bed from Tema. If you haven't heard of Tema I'm not too surprised. Started in the 80's these guys are mostly stuck in the 90's. They are a big company though, and ordering from them should be safe. A little searching on their site and I came across this Futura 404 bed. A simple metal framed bed, it pulls off a clean simple look. The cotton pillow catchers would have been a lot better if they were just birch panels, but for $399 you can't complain too much. They do have some other items in their Futura collection (a night stand and a dressing mirror) but I would stick with the bed.

Just a quick note. I got my Allen clock from furni the other day. It looks just as good in person as it does online. It did take a little tweaking to get it to hang perfectly straight, but it looks great on the wall. It looks like they have had a huge demand for their stuff, as most of it is currently out of stock. But feel free to pre-order some goods.
Don't forget about the grassrootsmodern family discount!
Available from Furni onine store for $48.
I have been sitting on this one for a long time because I wanted to make sure I did it justice. But I think the time has come. Gleason Woodworking Studio is a Salt Lake City based company that is bringing a touch of modern class custom woodworking. Strictly a one man show, craftsman/designer Chris Gleason has managed to design some wonderful products in the short 8 years he has been designing furniture. In fact his new line "New Modern Design" won some awards last year. Chris is sort of a mentor for me, and I am constantly amazed at his ability to merge great design and affordability. For those that are slightly handy, check out his new book "Building Real Furniture For Everyday Life" available from Amazon.com. If features 18 great projects that you can make in a day, most of which don't require a bunch of tools either. Its a steal at only $15.74. If you are interested in purchasing something from the New Modern Design collection feel free to contact Chris, or send us a note, and we will pass it on.
Looking to add a little Andy Warhol style to your pad? Make sure you check out Hybrid Home. They have a plethora of pop art inspired pillows and prints for your home. These pillows are from their Secret Service collection. I love the whole retro colors meets silhouette look, and Hybrid Home does it well. The backs of the pillow are solid colors. They measure 18" square and are available for $70 from Hybrid Home, or a store near you (if you are in California that is).
Available from Hybrid Home for $70.
There are pieces of modern furniture that are affordable, and then there are those that are not affordable, but cheaper than usual. The OFFI Perch Lounge chair is the latter. I would hardly call it affordable by my standards at $399, but it is a lot better than the normal $499 that Design Public has it listed at. I do admit though that I have a soft spot for this chair. Maybe it is the way it combines felt and bent plywood, two of my favorite elements. Maybe it is the little perch underneath it for which it is named, that reminds me of the old grade school chairs I grew up with. Whatever it is, I love it. If you are a fan as well, maybe now is your chance to get all that sweetness for a slightly less bitter price.
Available from Design Public for $399. Free shipping.
Those crazy guys at furni keep coming up with great products that represent the good old mid-century flavor with a touch of new style. Their latest creation, which is currently available for pre-order is the McGill Flip Clock. Taking it back to the good old days when the flip ruled the clock scene, the McGill has the best of both world. Super clean looking analog clock with the trade mark 1-4-7-10 furni style on one side, and a flip style calendar on the other. Currently only available in white and clear plastic, with a touch of wood grain to keep things real.
Available from the furni online store for pre-order. $56

I came across these shelves a while ago at 33Modern, and I thought that they were a nice combination of shelving and lighting at a decent price. Made of satin steel it should be nice and sturdy, although I have never seen one in person. The top light box has white acrylic panel inserts that cast off a nice soft light. The shelf measures 20" wide, 11" deep and stands 72" tall. Cost is $209 for the the wide shelf (shown) and $189 for a narrower (11" square) shelf. Personally I would rather have satin steel than the crapy plastic wood veneer thats on my Target shelves any day.
Available from 33Modern for $209.
If you love the look of Ugly Dolls, but they are just a little too ugly for you, then check out Alelale Plush toys. Straight from France these one of a kind plush toys are just the thing for your little chicken nugget. These cute little lala's (doll's) are hip, original and best of all supporting yet another grassroots artist. Prices range from $17 - $22 and shipping is only $7. The cute mod thing on the right is about 28 cm (11 inches) tall, and just waiting for a new best friend.
Available from Alelale at Etsy for $22 plus shipping.
Here is another great affordable modern kitchen product from the MoMA Store. It's called the Kitchen Tape Timer and was designed by Jozeph Forakis in 2004. Made of an aluminum block with a ring sticking out the top, this kitchen timer works by pulling out a tape, similar to a tape measure. It goes up to 60 min, and rings loudly when the time is up. Not only is this nifty little timer clever, its also very affordable at $18.
Available at MoMA Store for $18
If you haven't already seen the Boon Potty Bench, and you have a little one, its time. I saw this stylish little throne does it all. It comes with sorts of compartments and features that makes potty time a little bit easier. Plus its way more stylish than other options. We're not sure about the pricing yet, but if their Frog Pod is any indication, it should be super cheap. Another great bonus is that Target is carrying the Boon stuff, so it should be very available to everyone.

Even with it snowing here in the west I can't stop myself from thinking that spring is just around the corner. If you are lucky enough to have a yard or small deck to hang out on, then you most likely have noticed that there is a definite drought of good affordable outdoor modern furniture. Sure Modern Outdoor has great stuff, but who can afford it. This morning I got an email from CB2 announcing their new collection of outdoor furniture. While I am not a huge fan of butterfly chairs, at $39 it sure beats a plastic chair. The side table, made of painted steel, is also nice for $29. Perhaps the coolest though are their modern planters that run from $14 - $24. Pics after the jump.
Available from CB2 $6 - $39.
I came across this lime green ceramic bowl over at Sprout Home the other day, and I thought I should share. Having plants in your home can really add to the atmosphere, and turn a house into a home. Of course, any good plant deserves a good home of its own. So if you have a special plant at home yearning for a new pot, this could be your chance. The oblong shape of this pot almost makes me think that it would look with a modern bonsai set up in it. Keep it simple to show off the lines, and let the greens play off of each other. If you don't have a green thumb in your body, at least it could be a sweet cereal bowl.
Available from Sprout Home for $16
