I'm not sure what it is, but overstock.com has had a lot of nice mid-century modern furniture for great prices. This weeks find is this simple retro kiwi sofa. Nice simple lines, and great texture at a price that is hard to beat, only $299. They even have a matching chair for $179 that would make a great set. One of the things that makes furniture from overstock such a great deal is the $2.95 shipping. It's not even too late to get it before Christmas, if you act fast.
Available from Overstock.com for $299.

In my personal opinion, chrome and bent wood are two of the most beautiful things you can use to make nice furniture out of, so when you put the two together, you are sure to have a winner. My only lament with this table is that it is a birch veneer stained to look like walnut. Still for the small price of $149 this little table is looking pretty sweet. Not shown in the picture is a "self pull drawer" which hopefully is detailed as nice as the rest of the table is.
Available from iFurn.com for $149.

I am quite smitten with this nice simple lounge chair from overstock.com. I wouldn't quite go as far as to say I'm in love, but definitely smitten. Classic MCM
style with creme leather and piping to finish the look off. I have actually been looking for an affordable rocker for my wife, and I thought that with a little creativity I could make this work. It even says that the feet come off, so it should be pretty easy to take them off and put some sort of a rocker base on. Being the penny pincher that I am I just wish it was a little cheaper.
Available from overstock.com for $449 with free shipping.

Good organization can make a work space or a house much nicer to be in. This is a clever idea that I had not seen before. These bamboo file holders have super strong magnets on the back so that you can stick them to any metal surface. They claim they can hold up to 15 pounds which seems more than adequate for a bunch of papers.

When it comes to affordability there are many different aspects to take into account. The quality of the product is an important issue many people think about. One thing that is often overlooked is what the product is going to cost the earth. As green becomes the new black, we are seeing more and more manufactures starting to take environmental costs as serious as their production costs. This is the case with the new Think Chair from Steelcase. Made with up 44% recycled materials and 99% recyclable at end of life the think chair has truly been thought through from start to finish.
I was able to get my hands on one of these chairs for some real life testing. Assembly was a cinch, with only two bolts to attach the back to the rest of the frame. The design is well thought out, especially with the mesh back. Like any good office chair, the Think Chair is very adjustable. Once properly adjusted, it is very comfortable. I was especially impressed with the memory foam arm pads. The design is simple and clean and fits in great with a modern decor. If you are in the market for a quality office chair, and can afford it, why not get one that doesn't cost mother earth an arm and a leg.
Available from Steelcase starting at $699

If you are looking for affordable modern furniture Target is usually a good place to go. While the quality is not always the best, it's the best design for dollar amount that many of us can get. The Urban Chair is no exception. I haven't seen it in person, so I can't really comment on the quality, but none of the reviews online said quality was a problem. The chair sits low to the ground, and has an adjustable 3 position back. It is upholstered with microfibre and has chrome plated metal legs.
Available for $40 from Target.

It's not easy to find a nice looking platform bed at an affordable price. The Valentina Platform bed from Simply Platform Beds may just fit the ticket if you have a tight budget. The look is simple and clean, with no extra frills, and the price shows it. For only $149 for a double and $169 for a queen and free shipping, this bed is a great deal. Don't forget though, you get what you pay for. This bed is made of "High quality particle board sections with a pure white laminate.." Still $149 is a good deal.
Available from Simply Platform Beds for $149

Everyone is surprised to learn that my wife and I don't want to find out the sex of our baby before he/she is born. They all complain that people will be left with no choice to buy us clothes and baby items that are limited to baby yellow, baby green and white. What I want to know is what happened to all those other great colors? Jeeto is here to prove all those people wrong. Specializing in modern graphic prints for wall art or t-shirts, Jeeto knows there is a lot more to babies than blue, pink, yellow and green. I love that he also strays from the classic prints, his "Happy Bones" skull and cross bones are adorable. Best of all its all affordable. The walrus prints shown above are $24 and $14 respectively. Now thats a good deal.
Available directly from the artist starting at $14

Yep, now you Mid-Century Modern fanatics can even get you Kleenex in a new modern design. You've got to give Kleenex some credit for finally breaking out of the mold and doing something different. Not only do their new Kleenex Oval boxes come in some sweet modern patterns, they are, well, oval. Now you don't have to worry about hiding your box of Kleenex, you can display it with pride.

When you live in a small apartment or house, sometimes it is hard to find enough chairs for everyone when you have a group of people over. The problem is that you don't have space for couches and lounge chairs, and you don't have enough storage for stacking chairs. Acrylic folding chairs, like these from Target make a good alternative. If you have the storage for them great, if you don't, no problem. This chairs look just as great folded up and hanging on a wall as they do unfolded.
Available from Target for $27

Thanks to Scott for the tip!
Yea! It's been top secret until now, but today we are breaking the great news to all our families that we are pregnant. Thirteen weeks four days pregnant to be exact. As you can imagine we are both elated, and slowly counting the days until the little fellows grand entrance into this world. That means that there is sure to be some great baby content coming here on GRM. It also means that the pressure is on to get our house finished. I think we should have no problem getting all our ducks in a line in the next 185 days.

I have been looking at these felted wool cuffs for some time now debating whether I should post them or not. While they are super cool, the price is a little steep at $48 a piece, but every time I see them I just can't help but think how cool they are. Maybe someone could figure out how to make them for cheeper. Made of 100% wool felt, and available in a wide array of colors, these velcro closing cuffs have got some serious style.
Available from Greener Grass Design for $48

One of my favorite bloggers, Grace, over at Design Sponge has posted two great gift guides lately. One focuses on affordable modern art, and includes everything from photographs to prints to books, all of which look great but won't cost you a fortune. Also as you are gearing up to do some serious holiday shopping, make sure you check out her under $25 gift guide. Plenty of affordable modern goods to be had there.

Here is a decent looking stool table from one of our favorite local stores, Target. The price is right at $55, but who knows about the quality. My wife and I bought some bookcases from Target about a year ago, and while they looked nice at a glance, they were really pretty cheap. Anyone seen this one in person?
(edit: I was calling this picture a stool but thanks to glintboy, it is now corrected)
Available from Target for $55

I posted about the affordable modern platform bed I made for our good friends a while ago. Some of you wanted a little more information about how I built it. I finally got around to giving a somewhat better description of the process today, complete with some sketch-up renderings that are not even close to scale. I posted it over at Curbly in the how to section.
Check it out.
