I have been geeking out lately about the Case Study House program, and I was amazed and surprised to find that Arts and Architecture still has all of the original Case Study house articles available on their website for free. It's an amazing wealth of information, and a must read for anyone interested in Mid Century Modern Architecture.
Inspired by Design is a new online video series that is sponsored by Kohler. It focuses on "extraordinary architecture, sustainable and affordable construction, and progressive design shaped to the needs of the people who use it". I was admittedly skeptical at first, but after watching some I am actually impressed. The first couple episodes cover everything from a shipping container studio to die for, to prefab housing by Res 4, to my personal favorite the 100K house project.
Ed Dreier was one of Utah's great mid century modern architects.

I just spent a good chunk of time browsing through the portfolio of Irish firm Odos Architects, and all I can say is WOW! I would love to live in any of these homes. One of my favorite little details is the open fireplace in the concrete floor of this house - super cool, though probably not particularly child or pet friendly. A lot of Odos' residential projects have some great Eco features as well, like the grey water harvesting system of the 3 Mews House, for example.
All in all, they've got a pretty impressive portfolio going. I'd suggest you head on over and check it out for yourself! Meanwhile, enjoy the few appetite-whetting photos below!
I found out about this event about a month too late, unfortunately! From the looks of it, it might be worth the trek to Portland. Until I can make that happen, these photos will just have to do.
About: Street of Eames is Portland's annual modern home tour. Each April, this citywide event recognizes the city's best examples of mid-century modern and contemporary modern residential architecture. The goal of the tour is to raise money for after-school programs for homeless students at two of Portland's public schools. Street of Eames is essentially a home tour to help the homeless. In the past four years, the tour has raised over $400,000. This event is 100% volunteer effort, so every dollar raised goes directly to after-school programs.
Have any of you been to this event - or - do you know of any similar events taking place? Share in the comments!
I'm heading out to LA this afternoon, so I figure it's only fitting that I put a little video up of one of my favorite Mid Century Modern homes in LA, Case Study House #22, the Stahl house. Unfortunately it looks like they won't be offering any tours while I am there, but maybe next time.
With the birth of the digital age, more and more people are able to work from home now. If you are like me, when you are at home you still feel the need to go somewhere to concentrate on your work. Back yard sheds as offices are growing in popularity, and make a lot of sense. Shedworking; The Alternative Workplace Revolution follows this growing trend and documents some of the best looking back yard sheds you have seen.
Being cooped up all winter long inside has gotten me antsy to get outside and do some landscaping this year. If you are like me, and looking for some inspiration, make sure you check out UK based Modular. They have designed and installed some gorgeous modern gardens that make me swoon.
These hanging ceramic pods are designed specifically for air plants (Tillandsia) and come ready to hang with an all-natural hemp cord. Glazed inside and out in a bright, glossy white, each pod is handmade by ceramicist Mike McDowell of MudPuppy Ceramics. They're sold individually, but a cluster of pods would look pretty cool hanging outside on the porch or patio!
This documentary is part of the PBS American Masters series. It first premiered on March 31st. There are several other air dates coming up, or you can watch the full documentary online until June 30th.
My friend is selling his gorgeous Federal Heights/ Avenues Mid Century Modern home located on 291 Virginia St. Priced at just over $200 a square foot, the $700,000 price tag isn't exactly "affordable" like a lot of the content we feature here on GRM. That being said, this home is absolutely amazing and is located in one of my favorite areas in Salt Lake City.
Built in 1962 this home has a some great MCM architectural features and has been tastefully remodeled and updated in 2006. If you or someone you know is in the market for a high end classic modern home in SLC, make sure you let them know about this gem. For those not in the market, just follow the link below and enjoy the eye candy.
Louis Kahn was one of the greats. In this compelling 2003 film My Architect, his only son Nathaniel explores the relationship that he never had with his father. The clip above is the first 10 minutes of the film. The DVD can be purchased from Amazon for $10 - $30.
The reality of sunshine and rainbows is right around the corner and has me dreaming of outdoor living spaces. In this imaginary world wherein I actually have an outdoor area large enough to own outdoor furniture and thus accessorize said furniture, I own pillows like this. And I have a pool... and a million dollars. And swanky friends who lounge around drinking martinis and talk about politics. OK, maybe not that last one.
About:

An extra helping of eye candy for your Monday morning! All images are from a villa renovation by Studio John Irving, based in New Zealand. Wish I knew more about it or had some before shots for reference. Oh well, it's gorgeous anyway! Enjoy!
Never heard of Robert Rummer? Don't feel too bad, most people haven't. Robert Rummer was a builder in the 1960's in the Portland area who built many gorgeous mid century modern homes. Here is a great little interview with him that also shows a couple of the homes that he built. Enjoy!
Here is a fantastic hour long documentary on the life of the great master Le Corbusier. Done by Jacques Barsac in 1987 this film is full of wonderful vintage footage. Unfortunately it's all in French and the only subtitled version I have found is in German. If anyone knows of a version with english subtitles, please share!
The blog Unhappy Hipsters made a bit of a splash over the weekend. In case you haven't heard of it yet, here you go! The anonymous author pokes fun at modernism, with tongue planted firmly in cheek. The tagline itself made me chuckle - "it's lonely in the modern world". I'm glad there's someone out there reminding us not to take ourselves too seriously!
