Holiday shopping is fully upon us. If you are having a hard time finding that perfect gift for someone I strongly suggest that you check out Wantist.
Wantist is a hand-picked collection of goods, sorted and organized to help you give a great gift. We made Wantist for everyone who draws a blank when it comes time to give a gift. You want to give something unexpected, something personal, when all of a sudden it’s like you barely know the person and your brain has perfect recall of the Snuggie and nothing else. Your usual next steps: browse the same old stores or get your google on and hope to find the needle in the haystack. Instead, we wanted an application that was as insightful as a great salesperson. You say “I’m looking for something quirky for someone artistic,” and there you go—hand-picked quirky gifts for your artistic friend.
Hung outside or in, this mod bottle lantern is gorgeous through and through. I'd love it inside for the winter to add a little bit of shine and festiveness, and then outside in the garden when the weather turns nice. Fits standard tea lights and can be hung or set on a solid surface.
You know, sometimes we just like weird stuff, like food pods and gnomes... or tooth vessels. And that's okay. Besides, you've got to admit that there's something charming about this little porcelain molar, whether as a tooth pick holder or an addition to your curio cabinet. (Or, as Brooklyn Rehab suggests, a container for kids to collect lost teeth, which seems a little creepy. Is that a thing? If it is, you'll be happy to know it comes with a cork lid as well, to keep whatever strange bits you're storing safe.) Handmade porcelain glazed white.
While my iPhone 3G has treated me well I have been wanting to make the jump to the new iPhone 4 for a while now. The new deal from Radio Shack may just put me over the edge. Conveniently someone just sent me this link for a iPhone 4 cover from Lazerwood. I usually hate wood grain "stickers" and when I saw these my first thought was that they needed to make them out of real wood. That's when I realized they are real wood. Veneers anyway. Available in birch, walnut, cherry among others these wood covers have peel-and-stick backing making them easy to apply and remove without damage to the phone.
If you're like me, then you're always looking for good ways to store your mounds and mounds of magazines. I hate throwing them out, thinking that I'll reference them again "someday". So, when I spotted the Organixe Magazine File from MIO, I was pretty stoked. It's made from high-recycled content FSC certified cardboard and printed with vegetable and water-based inks. Aside from its obvious eco-cred, I love it for it's playful shape and printed pattern. Available in orange or green; ships flat.
I just touched down in NY. I'll be staying here for a long weekend with my good friends. Riding the subway up to their apt I couldn't help but think how much I really love this city. As soon as I take a quick nap I'll be hitting the streets, so feel free to follow me on facebook for photo's and updates. If there is something you think I need to do or checkout over the weekend (I leave monday night) let me know.
Ha! You thought that because it was winter, my birdhouse/feeder obsession would subside, didn't you? Not so. The ol' bird fever is still raging and after spotting this modern cedar and cardboard design, it's only gotten stronger. The Wee Rowhome was designed by Philadelphia-based architects Austin + Mergold and takes inspiration from the iconic row houses of the area. Fully weather-proofed and designed for ideal nesting conditions.
Great ideas don't always have to be revolutionary. Sometimes it's the simple things that are the most brilliant. Take modist for example. They take a simple eco friendly cotton bag, add some great mid century modern chair silhouettes hand screened on the side and sell the whole thing for just $15. Sounds like a winning idea to me.
We've reached a pinnacle of perfection here, folks. Handmade felt and leather accessories created specifically for all your favorite electronic devices. Pack & Smooch is a one-man-shop run by Hamburg-based designer Clemens Burkert. Basically, he specializes in making all of our wildest dreams come true: felt + tech. Pinch me!
This beautiful laser-cut desk clock is made from everyone's favorite eco-material: bamboo! With definite MCM vibes, it comes flat packed and easily assembles by pressure fit - no glue or hardware required. The back of the clock also functions as storage for loose coins or any other small items. Reversible black or white clock hands allow for a little customization - if you want to go buck wild, I suppose you could even paint them yourself!
It's about that time to start sending out your yearly holiday greetings! Why not show off your impeccable taste and love of all things Mid-Century Modern with these sweet cards from famed textile designer Walter Erhard? My three favorite are pictured above: A Merry Thought For Christmas, Angel, and Dalmatian. Check them all out here and let me know which designs catch your eye!
A little background on these cards and Mr. Erhard:
In 2002 Vigo purchased the assets of IMP Press and the copyrights to textile designer Walter Erhard’s card lines. Walter Erhard produced this range of Christmas cards under the name of 'IMP Press' from the late 1950's through to the end of the 1960's. He's won many awards and is recognised in many contemporary design manuals. Walter is considered to be one of the most progressive designers of the day.
I always love sleek subtle ceramics with a pop of hidden color. Fleet objects has a great collection of containers that are a lovely flat white exterior available with a white, mint, light blue, dark blue or light gray interior. They are available in a variety of sizes and shapes and come with or without lids. Pricing is very reasonable.
Man, West Elm is slaying it these days. They've had some seriously, seriously cool things lately - have you noticed? I know we've been gushing about them a lot lately, but it's sorta impossible not to with collections like this. The Pratt Collection combines eucalyptus wood in a walnut stain with white powder-coated steel, mixed together with sleek lines and modern angles. Talk about a slam dunk. I am in love!
Black Friday is almost upon us. While I'm not a big fan of braving the crowds, I do like a good sale online. What doors are you planning on busting down tomorrow?
It's 2011 calendar-buyin' time, you guys! Can you believe it? I mean it's Thanksgiving today. That's pure craziness. (Happy Thanksgiving, by the way.) I don't know where 2010 went, but at least with a fun wall calendar like this one, I can keep track of 2011. Right? Right.
This double-sided wall calendar is 9” x 24” and only available in a limited edition of 250. Get on it!
Design Fetish said it best: "Dual geekery - Star Wars and typography at the same time. Impressive!" Who knew it could be done? Well, other than a slew of nerdy graphic designers and typographers, of course.
My new place at Patrick Lofts is in desperate need of some art work, but unfortunately funds are low. I have a couple ideas in the works, but one novel new option that caught my eye was Turning Art. You can think of Turning Art as a netflix account for art. For as little as $10 a month you get a framed print shipped to your door, and you can switch it out for another print every couple of months. If you pay $20 you can have new art whenever you want. To make things even better, every dollar you spend earns you credit towards an original work of art. Convinced yet? I just may be.
Leave it to those brilliant folks at Normann Copenhagen to make something like a toilet brush aesthetically appealing. I always just get those crap 99¢ ones from IKEA (pun not really intended), but the Ballo brush is way cooler. Plus, did I mention that it wobbles? The rounded bottom is weighted so that it never falls over, but 'dances' in place ('ballo' means 'dance' in Italian). You know, in case you wanted to play with a toilet brush..? Who knows?
This is my kind of wristwatch! Clean, minimal, and available in an array of colors. I'll take one in yellow, please!
