This is a split eames-style screen comparison of two classic charles eames directed film montages, produced 14 years apart. in comparing the key eames image scenes of the manufacturing of products, between the classic mgm hollywood film - "the spirit of st. louis" in which charles filmed the plane assembly montage, and the 1970 eames office film - "fiberglass chairs", we see the eames office love for certain imagery....the mgm film is the one on the left and fiberglass chair is the one on the right.
Next Saturday Modernism Week starts in Palm Springs and with it the 3rd Annual Architecture + Design Film Series. This year they will have an astounding 12 films showing over the 5 day event (many of which we have already featured here). Makes me very jealous I don't live a couple hundred miles closer. Trailers for the films can be seen at Designscreen.org and more information about Modernism Week is available at modernismweek.com.
I had the opportunity to watch this great documentary film over the weekend and thought: "Oh, goodness. If there was ever a film made for GrassrootsModern readers, this is it!" And you know what? I mean it. The Cool School is a fantastic (and endlessly interesting) look into the birth of the modern art movement in Los Angeles during the mid-50s to late-60s. If you're interested in art, modernism, or the history of LA, your homework assignment is to watch it this week!
