Gilt :: Areaware & Alessi

26Oct09

I’ve mentioned GIlt before, and even though I don’t usually get too wrapped up in discount designer websites I continue to find myself quite smitten with GIlt. While it started out as a mostly women’s site with a couple of home items, it has had some nice additions as of late. The Gilt website now has a mens specific section as well as a travel section. In addition, they have a great iPhone app that will even remind you when sales are starting and let you purchase straight from the app. Speaking of sales, starting today they have some Areaware goodies on sale, and later in the week some Alessi. I’ve also got my eye on the Adiadas Consortium and Timbuk2 goodies. As always, GIlt is for members only. Sign up here.

Lexan sale

30Sep09

200909300725.jpg

I’ve always been a fan of the simplistic style of Lexan products, and I have been tempted to buy some things like the tykho radio in the past. The only thing that has stopped me is that the pricing seemed just barely out of the affordable range. Because Lexan is scaling back it’s line of product Unica Home has some great deals on Lexan items. Discounts are from 30% – 40% off which brings the tykho radio down to $32! Now that’s what I call affordable, now the only question is do I want blue or green?

Soooooo… Did you know that Target was pushing Blu Dot wares?? I had no idea. Just ran across the Real Good Chair on clearance for $90. I have to say, Target keeps surprising/impressing me, what with its George Nelson clocks and Orla Kiely dinnerware, etc. What are some other cool things you’ve spotted at Target?

Modern Economy

28Aug09

modeconomy.png

No, not THAT economy. Sheesh.  Modern Economy is an online shopping “event” where indie designers can unload overstocked goods and people like you and me can score said goods for up to 80% off. Not bad, eh? The next event starts at 9am on Wednesday, September 9th and goes for 48 hours. And just who are these participating “indie designers” you ask? Oh, people like Ferm Living, Offi, and Perch to name a few. So mark your calendars and get ready to score some amazing deals. You really won’t want to miss this event – it only happens once a year!!

For a complete list of participating designers, click here.

More about Modern Economy:
It’s truly a win-win situation for indie businesses and consumers alike; designers get to earn back their investment and budget-minded design enthusiasts are able to furnish their lifestyle with the wares they crave while maintaining the sanity of their pocketbooks. And lately, Modern Economy sales have been described as a sustainable business practice (we like that!) as we often sell products that designers may otherwise discard: items with minor faults like ceramics with an uneven glaze, or a pillow with a misplaced label.

Modern Economy is produced by the Mateo Ilasco company, based in the San Francisco Bay Area. We typically hold two sales a year in places like San Francisco, Los Angeles, or Portland, Oregon. We also started hosting virtual sample sales in 2008 and will continue to do that at least once a year. To stay in the loop, we recommend getting on our mailing list to be notified of the details of every sample sale.

Blu Dot’s Annual 20% Off Sale!

19Aug09

BLUDOT.png

It’s time again for Blu Dot’s annual 20% off sale! Enjoy the savings for 20 days (seemingly arbitrary, but no one’s complaining) August 20th through September 8th. If you’ve had your eye on a Real Good Chair, now’s the time to get it for a steal!

About Blu Dot:
Our goal is to bring good design to as many people as possible. Which means creating products that are useful, affordable, and desirable. To make that happen, our design process is founded on collaboration. Not just among ourselves as we play show-and-tell with concepts, but a total collaboration between pencil and paper, materials and machines, even packaging and assembly. We like to think that the form is almost inevitable, a by-product of the process. Our job is simply to help it emerge as beautifully and as efficiently as possible.

Julep Rocker

18Aug09

CB2.png

When I first saw the Julep Rocker in the CB2 catalog earlier this year, I thought it was a beautiful specimen. The $150 price tag wasn’t too bad either. Now as Summer is winding down, this outdoor looker is on sale at an even more amazing price – $100. If you’ve been meaning to get a few modern looking rocking chairs for the patio (or porch – do those still exist??) the Julep Rocker would be perfect! From the online reviews, it seems better suited for taller people – us shorties may have to slouch a bit to reach the ground. But, hey, that’s life! Grey polymesh over grey, rust-resistant, powder coated aluminum.

Dwell Studio on GIlt

17Aug09

I was first tipped off about GIlt a month or so ago when they had some Jonathan Adler home stuff on their site. Eager to get some goodies at 50% off I signed up only to find all the good stuff was gone. Since then it has been a little hit and miss especially when it comes to the “home” category (lots of men’s and women’s fashion). Today however they have Dwell studio and Dwell kids items for around 50% off or retail. You better act quick though, the good deals go fast. I already got my Dwell finger puppets for $18!
