100k House

09Mar10

If you are like me, and it has been a while since you have checked in with the 100k house guys, maybe it’s time you get over there. First off, Chad and his lovely wife have been in the home for some time now, and inspired by unhappy hipsters have taken a wonderful series of interior photographs. You can see the whole set on Flickr. Feel free to add captions where appropriate.

Secondly, the Postgreen team has broken ground on their second house, dubbed the Skinny Project, and are well on their way in the planning of a third development known as none other than Awesometown. I have the utmost respect for the Postgreen guys, and it’s exciting to see them having so much success!

Per Ranung

I don’t quite remember the bread crumb trail I followed to get to Per Ranung’s portfolio, but I can say it was worth it! This Swedish photographer has an eye for simplicity and a total control of lighting. He makes all these amazing interiors look even better, a task that’s harder than you might think. Be sure to check out the rest of his work and bask in the beauty of all those Swedish homes!

Nestled in

I’ve really been enjoying the Scandinavian design influences lately. They just have a way of being clean and modern but without becoming too sterile. In my search for inspiration I stumbled upon Nestled In, a Finnish blog started by a young married couple. The photography is amazing, and their home is lovely. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Anyone have any other favorite Scandinavian influences online?

At Home: UNIFORM Natural

18Feb10

Oh boy, do I have house envy! I stumbled across this gorgeous home on flickr, which belongs to Martha McQuade, the founder, designer, and artist behind UNIFORM Natural. I love the fun mix of mid-century and new, but what really does it for me are all the wonderful textures throughout the house. This space is very modern, but looks so, so cozy! Definitely a warm, livable home. I would love to call this place mine, wouldn’t you? Say, Martha, are you game for a house swap? Check out more images below, but definitely stop by her flickr page for the full set of pics.

Never heard of Stephen Mcdonald before? Well it’s about time. While Utah doesn’t have a mid century architecture legacy like some of the other places in the country, we did have some great architects back in the day, and Stephen Mcdonald is one of the good ones. The photo’s above are from a photo set that was recently posted on the Salt Lake Modern Facebook page.

More photo’s of the house here.

Julius Shulman Modernism Rediscovered

17Dec09

If you are looking for one last thing to wrap up and put under your Christmas tree, look no further. I recently received this book “Julius Shulman Modernism Rediscovered” from a friend, and it has absolutely blown my mind. Starting in the late 30’s and continuing all the way through the mid 70’s, this Taschen book has some of Shulman greatest work. It has been said the Shulman is single-handedly responsible for America’s love affair with modern architecture, and after reading this book I can see why. The best part of all is the incredibly affordable price, a mere $20.
Available from Amazon for $20.
SLC fans rejoice, there are even a few pages dedicated to the beehive state.

Cape Schanck House

Whenever I see photos of houses like this one, I have a hard time believing that people actually live in them. Kind of like when they discover some crazy new deep sea fish: it’s hard to wrap your head around the design, especially when you’ve never seen it in the wild. But there it is, in photos! Look, even a bed – so someone lives here, right? Anyway, the Cape Schanck House was designed by Australian architecture firm Jackson Clements Burrows. The impressive cantilever design maximizes the expansive views of the surrounding area.

My favorite part of the home, though, is the black and white kitchen. It’s really inspiring to see all of this great architecture coming out of Australia. Be sure to check out the rest of the Jackson Clements Burrowsportfolio – you won’t regret it!
