Wall Clock

There is an old MCM wall clock in the SJO airport that I always sit under while I am waiting for my flight. I’ve thought about how I could make something similar out clock parts, but never really figured out a good way to do it. It looks like all the hard work has been done for me. This DIY Wall Clock kit from Radius Design includes the clock hands and the dots for you to arrange however you want. This is no puny clock either, the big hand measures 18 inches long and the small hand is almost 16 inches. Made of aluminum and stainless steel.

DIY Wall Clock available from Radius Design for $99.

Heath tile overstock and seconds

04Jun09

200906040752.jpg

Heath makes some of the most beautiful tile I have ever seen. I have been drooling over their tiles for years now but the prices have always kept me from seriously considering them for any project. The seconds and overstocks section on their website has always been a temptation to me, although they state that they are for pick up only and they won’t ship. I wonder if anyone has ever been able to convince them to ship seconds? If not, it looks like I may have to take a road trip to Sausalito one of these days.

My Modern Mini

I love it when I see modern kids stuff, especially the hard to find stuff like doll houses. This labor of love comes from My Modern Mini. Designed and built by an architect who has a love for building models this is the first of hopefully a long series of modern doll houses. The house is 1:12 scale built from MDF and painted with a primer coat ready for customization. Current introductory pricing is $299. If that is too steep for you, hopefully these pictures will inspire you to make your own.

Available for $299 from My Modern Mini

The Clock Clock

01Jun09

ClockClock.png

The Clock Clock is the brainchild of Swedish design group Humans Since 1982. It features a set of 24 analog clocks whose hands rotate to create the illusion of a digital timepiece. As the time passes, each set of hands spins and whirls, performing its own unique choreography. Seen as a whole, this process is simply mesmerizing. Not sure yet if this clock will ever be available commercially, but it is a fascinating concept nonetheless. In the meantime, you can download a free typographic version of the Clock Clock for all your clock-font needs.

It was recently announced that the classic Frank Lloyd Wright home falling water will now be available as a lego kit. It was designed in conjunction with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, Brickstructures, Inc. and the LEGO Architecture brand. It’s expected to go on sale this July, pricing is still unknown but should be around $55. What is known is that it looks brilliant and that I want one. A big thanks to Amanda for pointing it out to me.

Available from Brickstructures in July

McMaster-Carr

Hopefully everyone here has already heard of McMaster-Carr. They are a sort of do it yourself industrial superstore. With over 480,000 products, there is a good chance that they have what you need, if only you could find it. I know that there are some great treasures amongst those 480,000 items. I almost bought some track for a sliding door from them once, and seriously looked at some of their faucets too. If you have been brave enough to wade through all the 480,000 products and found some good ones, we want to know.

What are your favorite items from McMaster-Carr?

Do you have any other similar websites with great finds?

I love things made out of felt. It’s such a simple material that has a great feel to it and can come in a ton of fun colors. I have to admit though that whenever I see cool felt coasters or place mats I always think to myself, man that would be so easy to make myself if I just had a roll of felt. FilzFelt is a felt lovers paradise. Not only do they have all sorts of goodies like felt pillows, coasters, trivets, etc, but more importantly they sell all their felt direct by the yard. All their felt is imported from Germany, and they offer all sorts of tips on how to work with it yourself.

Way Basics

27Apr09

The idea of flat pack furniture can leave a bad taste in some peoples mouths. While I personally don’t mind grabbing my allen wrench and following some Swedish illustrations to get my furniture assembled there are some who like to keep it even more simple. Way Basics has taken flat pack furniture about as basic as possible. At the heart of their system is Z Board a super strength cardboard that forms the building block of all their furniture. Assembly is managed simply by peeling the backing of the sticky tape. Doesn’t get much easier than that. You can either purchase a preconfigured unit, or buy building blocks to design your own. The cubes are available in a bunch of different colors and prices start at a measly $20. Video of assembly and more pictures after the jump.

DIY Eero Saarinen Side Table

23Apr09

Table1.png

I saw this little DIY project recently on one of my favorite blogs, Plastolux. Get a couple of old Bose speaker stands, some fiber board, and paint and you’ve got yourself a Saarinen side table! Very, very cool. Great job, Tyler! See more and read about the process here.
