The Le Klint Pendant 172 is a classic modern design, and it’s on sale at Y Lighting for almost $100 off it’s normal price. Here’s the description from Y Lighting;

These hand-folded sculptural pendant shades were designed by architect Poul Christiansen between 1969 and 1978 and have been in continuous production by the Danish company Le Klint. The material is a color-stabilized white PVC which is completely washable and anti-static. Le Klint pendants are enjoying renewed popularity along with other design icons of the 1960’s. All pendants include 5 feet of white cord.

Available from Y Lighting for $282.

Affordable Modern Kitchen Entry:
Brooklyn Co-Op

This may be the smallest entry so far, but it packs plenty of punch. Ayan has made good use of the small floorplan in his Brooklyn Co-op.

My wife and I bought a co-op in Brooklyn earlier this year. The kitchen looked like it was all original from the late 50’s, and in pretty rough shape. We gutted everything, including knocking down 2 partition walls, doing a pass through into the living room, and stripping lots of wallpaper. The cabinets are Ikea, counter tops are granite from a local shop, back splash is glass tile, and floor is cork, which we laid right over the existing linoleum. The appliances are all new GE.

Approx price, $6,000 for materials, $5,000 for appliances.

Modern Materials Design

Some of you locals may remember Modern Materials Design. They were a local modern shelter store that started out by the Green Ant, and later moved down the road towards The Light Spot. More recently they closed up their doors, and went online only. For a while the online store wasn’t the best, but they just recently relaunched and it’s looking pretty sweet. They have some especially good deals on modern pillows, starting at $20 for 17″ x 17″. When I was at the Las Vegas Furniture Fair, they had some really sweet large fiberglass planters, so keep your eyes out for those too.

Grassrootsmodern reader Baz just purchased a fantastic Mid-Century Modern home in Indianapolis, and in classic GRM spirit has already launched into the demolition. He is documenting the whole thing over at Atomicindy.blogspot.com He is making some great progress in helping restore the home to it’s former glory. One thing that he was looking to bring back to it’s old glory were the exterior lights. With a little help from some friends, he was able to run across Remcraft lighting, which has a whole line of Mid-Century Modern lighting. They have some great swedish modern bullet lights and cylinder bullet lights for a fairly reasonable price. Both come in single or double, and make for some great Mid-Century Modern exterior lighting.

Available from Lighting Universe starting at $65.

Liam found some great lamps on KSL.com yesterday for $25 a piece. I am so tempted to buy them, but I am kind of on the fence, so I thought I put it out there to see if anyone else wanted them. Any real details about them are a little fuzzy, besides the fact that they are “Danish Modern”. I did call and talk to the lady yesterday and she confirmed that they are some sort of wood (wenge?) and the white part is ceramic. They really are 39″ tall, which is a big lamp. The shades are the kind that clip onto the light bulb, so it would be easy to switch them out if you wanted to. It doesn’t sound like she is going to budge on the price, as she has had quite a bit of interest already. If somebody gets these, let us know!
I was also looking for kitchen appliances and found these two stoves for a good price. I think we really want to do a cooktop and built in oven, so will probably pass, but if anyone else is looking for a stove, check these out. They are both Jenn Air. The one on the left is a dual fuel and is priced at $600. The one on the right is gas only, but is only $100!

City Honeycomb Hanging Light

A couple months ago I posted some beautiful salvaged cardboard lights from Graypants. These City Honeycomb Hanging lights share many of the same design cues, even if the core material is plastic instead of cardboard. By by layering the corrugated plastic in alternating patterns, these pendants form a beautiful honeycomb detail that help give these lights their unique look. The lights are available in three different sizes, and start out at a fairly reasonable $85.

Available from Tonichome from $85 - $135.

Outdoor Photocell

Photocell
I have had a couple of people as me about how I was able to wire up our industrial outdoor lighting so that it comes on automatically at night and goes off in the morning. At first we thought about making it motion activated like our old one, but the reality is that we would probably prefer to have a porch light on all night regardless of any motion in the area. We were able to find a cheap photocell that activates the light fixture in low light conditions. The trick was finding one that would fit nicely in the waterproof junction box that came with our light. The one we settled on is pictured above, and was available at our local hardware store for around $8. They are commonly used for outdoor pole lights. I was able to find it online at farm-home.com, but I am sure there are other places that have it as well. To attach it to the fixture you simply unscrew one of the access holes in the junction box (we used the top one) and insert the photocell. It has a rubber foam gasket to keep it water tight. The only two downsides to the $8 trick is that photocell usually only last around 5 years, and they can only control incandescent lights.

We used to have two big spotlights on a motion sensor on our garage. Over the last month or so the motion sensor has gotten progressively worse until it was almost non functional. This weekend we finally got around to replacing the whole light fixture. We found these nice weather tight industrial lights in the “barn section” of Sutherlands, a local hardware store. We ended up buying one for the front of the house, and one for our back porch. I love the look of them, and love the $18 price tag even more. The one in the front we added a little bit of hardware to make it turn on and off automatically depending on the amount of daylight. Needless to say, we are quite happy to be rid of the two huge, non-functional spotlights.

Heavy Lights

I love it when someone pushes the bounds of materials, using them for something that you wouldn’t typically think of. That’s exactly what Benjamin Hubert has done with his Heavy Lights. The range features several beautiful light fixtures with delicate 5mm thick walls. The concrete is stained a soft grey color and the visual effect is gorgeous. It makes what some think as a cold hard material look soft and inviting. While it doesn’t look like these are readily available for purchase you may be able to find a local concrete countertop guy that would be willing to give it a try, or you could try yourself. One thing I love about concrete is that it is very inexpensive.
Check out all of Benjamin Huberts work here.
