Mid Century Sofa

01Feb10

Furniture from Urban Outfitters seems too good to be true. Take this “Mid Century Sofa” for example. Great simple classic style and priced at a mere $480. The downside? It seems like any reviews I’ve read in the past have been pretty unfavorable as to the quality of the furniture. Also, I’m always sketched out by the thought of buying furniture that is only available online.
Anyone have any feedback about this sofa, or furniture from Urban outfitters in general?

Mid Century Sofa available from Urban Outfitters for $480.

no experience with urban Outfitters stuff, but if its anything like the Blue Dot-designed couch sold by Target, its a disappointment. Like many of the UO comments, the Target product looked great but was super uncomfortable and not great quality. Target carried them in the store so it was fairly easy to experience their “badness”.

UO has quite a few great-looking designs but I had to pass based on the comments.

I’ve read up on UO furniture recently and althugh aesthitically it looks nice; it’s hard, uncomfortable and should need to be be replaced within a yrs time. You basically get what you pay for. There were also some articles floating around about the founders disliking the gay community, etc.

I have this couch. It is fine. It looks great from the front, but the metal grill on the back is ugly. I would not recommend it as your main couch. It is sort of hard and with no arms not that comfortable. I think it would be great in an office that also serves as a spare bedroom because when you take off back cushions, it is a fairly comfortable twin bed.

I have sat on this couch at an Urban Outfitters store. It is very uncomfortable. Also, the picture of the back does not portray how truly ugly the back of the sofa is.

The downtown UO had a couch on the floor during black friday for an amazing price.. between 100-225 (can’t really remember). I liked the shape and design of the couch but that was pretty much all it had going for it. It was very firm and the fabric was horrible. It felt like a pair of polyester pants from the 70’s. It would be great for a kids play room where I wouldn’t have to worry about it getting trashed but definitely not for everyday living.

I love the truman tables but feel like I can get authentic well built mid century modern tables from craigslist/ksl for about the same price if not less.

why not buy the original and very well made peter hvidt daybed off ebay? it’s not really much more. they can be bought for anywhere from $200 – $1000 depending on the competitive bidding, size, presence of caning, wood used, and how it is listed….less for midcentury daybed or danish sofa, more for john france daybed or if hvidt is identified as the designer.

foam and mattress upholstery is cheap and customizable.

Thanks for the comments everyone, and thanks bunny for the photo’s and insight.

Man, at $200 I would have been all over this thing…..

UO furniture is horrible. Went down there when we were sofa shopping because they looked so good in the pictures, but the actual items are uncomfortable, poor quality and cheap looking in person.

Felt semi-disposable, like it was aimed at teenagers/dorm rooms. Look cool, replace it in a year when fashion has changed or ditch it when you go home for the summer.

The nicest thing in the store was a vintage Steelcase desk, which turned out to be part of the store’s decor and wasn’t for sale.

Our friends have recently bought an Urban Outfitters sofa with buttons and arms along the side. It looks good (compared with the day bed sofa) but I agree with everyone else’s comments saying you get what you pay for.

We were considering buying the same one mentioned but quickly changed our minds after reading the reviews.
