Reader question :: Affordable egg chair?

The question of original designer furniture vs knockoffs designer inspired furniture is an age old debate that will never go away. Truth is, for some people throwing down $5,934 for a licensed Arne Jacobsen Egg chair is not an option. A GRM reader in need of a little help writes…

Hi there, I would love to have you recommend a reputable company who I can purchase a replica EGG chair from. Preferably I would like to purchase from somebody on the East Coast as I live in Philadelphia.

Really appreciate if you can point me in the right direction – there are so many bad ones out there…

Many thanks
Michelle

Anyone have any good advice for and Jacobsen inspired egg chair that won’t break the bank?

    Looks like GRM advertiser Evinco Design has one for $750. I believe they are out of NY. See:

    I actually used Evinco design to order an egg chair this past sept. It was delayed a bit, but that is because they were not happy with the quality of the stiching on the chair. Made me a bit frustrated at the time but once I got the chair I was happy with the outcome. I think I paid around $900 after a little negotiating. Link to evinco is at the top right of most pages on grassroots. Hope that helps. Oh, and they are out of NYC. I think.

    I think a good approach is to find a quality furniture store in your area that you trust. Here in SLC I go to a shop that has quality custom furniture as well as some of the “designer inspired” pieces. Based on the quality of the other lines in the store I feel good about the quality of the knock-off. It’s always good to see the pieces in person as well, and unless you have experience with the originals, most time it’s hard to tell. Plus, if you have seen and sat in an original, you’ll be better able to tell the difference between them. But also, coming from a design and architect, there’s usually a reason the originals cost more, and only a small portion of that price jump comes from the name and license. Look at it like a car, you could get the BMW, or you could get the Kia that looks like the BMW.

    I’m wondering which ‘quality custom furniture’ shop Tristan goes to. I’d love to check it out.

    @Eric
    I’ve purchased a few pieces (actually, most everything in our house that isn’t IKEA)from Copenhagen West. While they may not have a lot of “one-off” custom pieces, most of what they do carry is pretty good quality and leans towards the Mid-century vibe (as danish and mid-century aesthetics are pretty similar.) We’ve been really happy with what we’ve bought from there and their “designer inspired” pieces are pretty good. That’s my opinion anyway.

    Evinco has a showroom in NYC – I think in Park Ave.

    http://www.whiteonwhite.com out of NY has one for $800.00 but I’m not certain if there are color options. The one on their site shows red. Good luck. I’m excited to see other responses.

    I own a home furnishings store just outside of Philadelphia in Phoenixville. We have a great designer inspired version of the Egg Chair and we’ll beat anyone’s prices. The quality is outstanding and the price is very approachable. Call us at 610.917.0121 or go to http://www.HipsterHome.com
