Best Budget Pendant?

With the waning daylight it is becoming evermore apparent that we need to finally get a pendant light put up over our kitchen table. While we originally had planned on putting a nice (1) Nelson Bubble up, we are definitely looking for other budget options too. Lights like the (2) Sol Pendant Lamp from CB2 are simple and have a nice pop of color, but at nearly half the price of a bubble I’m not sure it’s worth it. Ikea has some nice options, from the ultra budget (3) KNAPPA to the slightly more expensive (4) KULLA or (5) BRASA. Lastly there is the prospect of doing a DIY similar to (6) MOOOI Random light (or the super budget UK knock off by (7) Wilko). All the choices have my head spinning. Any suggestions?

I love the MHY Pendant from “Norway Says” at DWR. Its hight design on a dime. http://www.dwr.com/product/mhy-pendant.do?keyword=mhy&sortby=ourPicks

I think it really depends on what else is going on in your dining room. We have the “Twig” light from Fire Farm, which will look amazing with our Ferm Branch-inspired wall once we get it all painted. From the ones you listed, you can’t really go wrong with a Nelson lamp. The CB2 one would add a nice dimension with that pop of color, like you said, and it’s only $99. Still, it comes down to what would best compliment the other elements in the room. :)

We have the IKEA BRASA (black) above our kitchen table. Easy to install and provides a nice, soft light.

You left out my favorite low cost/high style pendant the Norm 69. Designed by Simon Karkov in 1969 the Norm 69 ($100) is a flat packed, PVC alternative to the ultra expensive Artichoke Pendant ($7,000). It has beautiful mid century danish lines and because the bulb is hidden from view, it’s perfect for a compact florescent bulb and can handle quite a large one — great for a strong, but glare-free source of light. And the price? Less than $100 for about the same size as the Artichoke lamp. Awesome!!

We just installed our Nelson Bubble Lamp and it looks great! I wish we had more excuses to use pendant lamps in our house. I would get a couple of the other shapes in addition to our saucer.

I installed the SOL lamp earlier this year (bought it on sale) and wasn’t real happy with the quality of it. The lip wasn’t cut square (flat, straight) so I had to fiddle with it so that I could get it to hang so that the “low” side was facing the living room (so I wouldn’t have to stare at the flaw every day). Overall it works, but I was a bit disappointed with the quality. If I were to do it over again I’d opt for the Nelson Bubble Lamp.

Another thing to think about is how the fixture lights your room/space. #s 2, 4 and 5 only offer down light. While I like the Sol Pendant Lamp it is very big in person and would only light the table. If you like the look of the resin style lights I think the Wilko looks cheap. Another idea if it fits into your budget would be Louis Poulsen’s ph5. Hope this helps

I agree with Heidi, get a Norm69; and make sure its acutally a Norm and not a knockoff. You shouldnt have to pay more than $100 for it, you get to build it (from 69 pieces), just be warned that it doesnt come with a cord – just get a pendant light kit rom Lowes in white. I also looked at:

We have CB2’s Eden over our dining table. It’s cotton, which can be a nice contrast if you’ve got lots of plastic/metal in the area. The diffuser keeps you from being blinded by glances at the bare bulb. It does tend to hold dead bugs and dust. I did have to cut the cable and hard wire it.
