Modern Sectionals

Okay, people. I need your help! We’re on the prowl for a nice modern sectional. Nothing over-stuffed and humongous, but nothing rigid and uncomfortable either. A nice blend of form and function would be ideal (as always). That said, I love, love, love the look of Blu Dot’s Bonnie and Clyde sectional but am concerned with the comfort level. Does anyone own this beauty or have you sat on it in a store? How comfortable is it? On the other side of things, my husband is smitten with the Annex sectional from CB2. While a little more “puffy” than I’d like, I can’t deny that it looks like one comfy couch. Owners of either of these sofas, share your experiences! Owners of other awesome modern sectionals, tell us what you have! As always, links are appreciated!

Bonnie and Clyde Sectional by Blu Dot: $2500 – $2800

Annex Sectional from CB2: as shown $2800

This may not be modern enough for you, but I’ve been saving my pennies (and dollars, lots of them) for the Room and Board York sectional. They have a bunch of other sectionals that are probably more modern than the York, including: Roland, Townsend, Clarke, Jasper, Melrose and Holden.

Thanks, Shelah! Now that you mention it, I remember seeing the Melrose before and liking it. At least I think it was the Melrose. I’ll take a look!

although not a great picture, below is my sectional that i purchased at macy’s home store. occasionally, they will carry some pretty modern furniture.

Hey, I’m really interested in seeing what you learn…we’re vaguely looking, too.

Koolhaus has a nice sectional called the byward sectional. it has a nice shape, nice high back and comfy pillows.

i’ve sat in the bonnie and clyde and unfortunately, it’s not at all comfortable, and i like firmer couches as well. you may want to check out some of the sectionals from gus modern

my mom has the carter sectional and it’s great. i have the spencer (not the sectional though) and it too is very comfortable and easy to maintain.

I will echo John’s opinion above. I just sat on the Bonnie and Clyde sectional last weekend, at a store here in DC, and it’s super-uncomfortable and feels poorly made. I like most of Blu Dot’s designs, and they seem like a cool company, so it’s too bad I can’t recommend them.
Have you considered Room&Board’s Reese sectional? Cool mid-century look:

Rob – I’ve not heard of Koolhaus before, I’ll definitely check them out.

That’s really unfortunate about the Bonnie and Clyde. It’s so sexy! Thanks John and Rob for the heads up.

I was looking at the sectionals from Gus Modern and quite liked the Carter and Jane pieces. My favorite is the Spencer, though, which is not offered as a sectional. Just my luck! It’s good to know that the Carter is comfy. I’ll remember that!

Since several people have suggested Room & Board, I am seriously considering a few of their pieces. Plus, you can customize with over 200 fabrics… Very tempting, indeed. Can anyone attest to the comfort/durability of any of the Room & Board sectionals? The closest store is, well, not at all close, so I won’t have a chance to test them out in person.

    Any other suggestions/insight/ideas?

I found a VERY lightly used Room & Board Dublin sectional on my local Craigslist at the beginning of summer and it’s very comfy. My only gripe is that the corner section is really light, and the cushions are a snug fit (a good thing), so unless the sectional is on carpet or you put some rubber pads on the feet it sort of drifts away from the other two sections. On carpet or a rug, however, no problem. Very comfy and it has a mid-century feel, to me, without being too MCM/modern. I like it a lot.

Have you checked out EQ3? They have some decent ones there (Lola – can’t comment on the comfortableness of it). We got ours through elitedesignfurn.com (local dealer though), I have a feeling the one we got (York) is too meaty for you.. but it is probably one of the most comfortable sectionals I have ever sat in.

I have a Room and Board couch, and it is wonderfully made and comfy.

Currently I am eying the Delaney sectional from Crate and Barrel. http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=931&f=25940
