Way Back When: Eichler

26Jun09

Joseph Eichler may be one of the most well known Mid-Century Modern residential architects developers. In the 50’s and 60’s he was fortunate enough to design and build whole neighborhoods in California. I must admit when it comes to Eichler I’m pretty ignorant, but I’m looking to change that. Next month for my Fiesta Movement mission I’ll be heading to California for a weekend to look at Eichler homes, and hopefully take some good pictures and video. Before I go I need your help!

What are some good websites to learn more about Eichler?

If I could only go to one neighborhood, which one should it be?

First up: Eichler was not an architect, he was a developer. He employed several different architects.

I’m going to CA in a few weeks as well! While everyone else is at Disneyland, I was hoping to find some Eichler neighborhoods to cruise through. Are there any relatively close to Newport Beach??

Try: http://www.eichlerforsale.com/ Get a hold of Renee. She may even let you in to one or two, which would enhance the live-Twitpic tour I’ll be expecting. Hint-hint.

    Cheers,

This might sound campy, but you could try finding open homes. We have owned our San Jose Eicler for 6+ years now (we plan to never move), so I’m not very familiar with the real estate agents selling them in my area.
http://eichlernetwork.com/forsale.html is a site that will turn up the realtors willing to cough up the site’s advertising fees.
Here are some agents I know of who appear to not advertise on the site:

    http://www.eichlerrealtor.com
    http://www.eichlerhomes.com
An online search can turn up others, especially if you plan to be in a specific area.

As for a focus area, I know the Palo Alto and San Mateo Highlands tend to be the more posh/expensive areas, but there are surprising things to be found in the smaller neighborhoods as well.

There’s quite a good remodeled on off of Fairhaven in Orange. Just recently went and they looked awesome. http://www.eichlersocal.com/aeh.html The new ads for volkswagen were filmed in front of one of them too. Good luck Orange is about 15 mins away from Disneyland off the 5 or 57 freeway. Should be a fun trip.

To see the eichlers go to Marin County, CA. In the town of San Rafael, go out to the Lucas Valley neighborhood. It’s all Eichlers. Also keep in mind that it is Marin County, one of the most expensive counties in the country. Those eichlers are all $600k – $1MM.
