I love toys, especially mechanical ones that are full of engineering genius like these ones from Chico and Francisco Bicalho. These three toys, the Skidum, Awika and Le Pinch are all part of the MoMA stores “Destination Brazil” series. Each toy winds up and moves in it’s own special way. Some shoot sparks, some glow in the dark, and all of them look just as brilliant sitting there as they do in action.

Available from the MoMA store for $15.

    Laura, my full name is Francisco Bicalho Domingues. Bicalho from my mom, and Domingues from my dad. In Brazil when you are baptized with Francisco, there is a 99.9% chance your nickname will be ‘CHICO’ nothing to do with ‘boy’ in Spanish (mind we speak Portuguese in Brazil), but because there is a pun on the abbreviation of the name to ‘FranChico’, so, every Chico in Brazil (like Chico Buarque, Chico Mendes) is a Francisco. Ever since I was a boy, and already a ‘Chico’ (not a Chico/boy, but a FranChico) I referred to myself as Chico Bicalho, as opposed to Chico Domingues, that made me sound as if I were Spanish, which, by the way does not indicate I don’t care for Spain, since Spain happens to be my favorite country in the world.

    Love;
    Chico
