Daniel Everett

Allow me to introduce you to the work of photographer Daniel Everett. He and I went to school together, though he was always in a league of his own. I am especially fond of his aesthetic – very clinical and sterile, but beautiful and unsettling at the same time. It’s hard to describe, really. There is just a strange sense of disconnection going on – and I love it. His ongoing Departure series has some of my favorite images to date. You can see more of his work here.

I do like the Departure series. I am less intrigued by the images of the repeated objects such as the one with the subway turnstiles (I believe that’s what they are). However I must admit that I am in love with the yellow walled bathroom sink image.
I recall an overused statement, “at least make it more interesting than the wall.” The day I realized those words were misguided was a great day, as if the wall is uninteresting and so easy to compete with. If you can actually create something that can stand up to the perfection of the pure simplicity and power of a wall, then you have done something.
