Affordable Kitchen Contest Entry: Eco Modern

Eric from Portland knows how to leverage his skills. By doing some freelance webdesign he was able to get this amazing kitchen for the cost of materials only. Not only does the kitchen look great, but it’s jam packed full of unique green products.
Custom cabinetry made of bamboo and Sustainable plywood guts. The backsplash and inner core layer of the counter top are made of Sourghum board covered in not so eco boating epoxy for water resistance. The counter tops are paper pulp top and bottom with the sourghum board core. Built by Bren Reis at www.earthboundindustries.com cost was mostly materials as Bren and I agreed on a trade where i provided him with webdesign and logo and he provided is expertise in cabinetry.
Approx price; $3,500

I have to say, this is my favorite so far (not to diminish the accomplishments of the other entries).
Design-wise, this kitchen feels 100% finished. It has that sense of refined completion where one couldn’t change a single thing to make it any better. It’s very clean and sparse, but doesn’t come across as mundane because of the unique materials choices and innovations; nearly everything in this kitchen feels bespoke.
Going beyond the design, I love how the homeowner practiced some innovation in funding his project — there’s creativity evidence throughout the whole process here. Oh, and let’s not forgot the conscious efforts taken to choose materials wisely. Finally, my applause goes out to anyone who finds a way to eschew the range-topping microhood.

Hi there
this is my kitchen.
Thank you Stephen for your comments.
I just remembered the counter top material company.

It was a struggle to design such a small kitchen and using all the space smartly. We have a spice drawer to the right of the range, and a lazy suzan to the left. Everything is smartly organized to maximize space.
Tried to stay as green as possible on this.
Again thanks for the props.
feel free to email me with any questions. I am super excited to help or answer any of your queries.
wow! absolutely beautiful. this is an example of sheer ingenuity, originality and beauty. awesome!
or maybe i’m just in a state of elation from last night’s election.
i think this is my favorite entry so far, too. I really love how the super-trendy long horizontal handles go perpendicular to the “grain” of the cabinets. When you say custom built, that refers to the sizes, right? What would I ask my local cabinet guy (in San Francisco) if I wanted to get similar cabinets?
Well when i mention CUSTOM, i mean that they were custom built to the sizes that would fit my kitchen by a cabinet maker. No standard sizes.
I chose the materials and orientation of grain etc… Basically made for my kitchen dimensions. I felt i wanted something personal in my kitchen where we spend a lot of time. Ikea and Homdepot kitchens are great but the sizes didn’t work for us. Also i would do IKEA cabinets if they had fit, but probably just the structures, i would have done custom faces eitherway as i like to get my creative energy out somewhere.
Beautiful. & where have I heard that before…eco modern….?
Hey i added some more pictures of the making of. I feel people who read this blog are into the process.
