How did I miss this?
26Sep08

Not only am I just finding out that there are plans underway for a huge Frank Gehry designed mixed residential/commercial project here in Utah, but Frank Gehry himself was here a couple of days ago to show the plans for the project and answer any questions that the public had. It’s obvious that the Gehry designed project is going to shake up Utah architecture quite a bit, which has some people concerned. Personally I have to agree with Gehry when he said
There’s been a lot of stuff around here that I wouldn’t call great architecture at this point, but I think if we do something special, other people might step up to the plate and it might up the ante,
Check out more details at the G Code Properties.

Somehow I don’t think Gehry’s sculpitecture up’s the ante. 2 billion dollars for a fabricated city in Lehi?? Utah’s tallest building, a man made lake, a retail smorgesborg all in the midst of rural farmland. Sounds not only irresponsible, but like the beginning of the next Vegas (without the gambling and drinking of course).
I think you missed it… b/c the guy running the project is Brandt Andersen. Just another Utah white collar criminal shielding his funds with real estate. Check out the history of his company Usight, network marketing for websites.
indeed, how did you miss this? i’m not even a huge fan of gehry’s to begin with, but it will be cool to have something of his in utah. perhaps it will inspire more grand architects to design for our home…
Seth - this project is not planned for rural Lehi. It will be nestled near Point of the Mountain, next to Traverse Mountain, Cabela’s, and across from Thanksgiving Point. There is a very large outdoor/outlet mall planned for the area as well, which is unrelated to the Gehry project. While I agree that Lehi seems an odd choice, I believe that this project is a very positive thing for Utah. The only problem I can foresee is an issue with funding, what with the economic meltdown we’re only beginning to experience. I really have high hopes for this project, though, and can’t wait to see some finalized plans.
I heard about this almost a year ago–sorry for keeping it under my hat for so long!
It’s kind of sad that the Gehry will be facing all those boring cookie-cutter houses at Traverse (I wonder if the foreclosure signs will still be littering the neighborhoods in a year?)
