Starting on the kitchen

We have been in our house for almost 6 months now, so it’s inevitable that I finally got some demo work done. My wife was out of town for the week and had no idea what I was up to. The whole thing was very inexpensive, less than $200. It took me about a week working on it when I got home from my 9 - 5, and on the weekend. The worst part was really all the cleaning. I swear I spent as much time cleaning up my mess as I did making it. The video shows the progress as I knock down two walls, move the electrical, add some new lighting and start putting it all back together. This is the first phase in our kitchen remodel.

Wow! Did you consult with anyone before you started? we’ve been in our house for nearly a year and desperately want to knock out a wall to extend the kitchen but I’m afraid we’ll somehow wreck the house by knocking down a load bearing wall… any advice to get us started?

    Looks great!
By the way, who is the song by?

Chantelle, We didn’t consult with anyone. Our walls weren’t load bearing. In our old house we tore down a load bearing wall and there was a local structural engineer that gave free advice. I called and he spec’d the beam size we needed to carry the load.

The song is Aguas de Março (Joga Bossa) by Smoke City.

I recall a previous post where you started some other big project while your wife was out of town. :) I can’t wait to see the progress on the kitchen -

    I’m full of respect!

My wife and I are in the process of remodelling our kitchen using original 50s units made from aluminium left over after WWII (originally it was destined to be Spitfire nose cones - honest!).

It’s adventurous, it’s going slowly and I’m blogging the whole thing at EnglishRose Kitchen. If we get it right though, it is going to be a very cheap solution because each unit is costing in the region of $30..$40.
