Let the Sanding Begin

I’m off to Diamond Rental to pick up a floor sander this morning. I’ve never actually refinished any floors before, but I have talked to plenty of people that have so I figure it can’t be too hard. I hope to get them all sanded today and get our natural oil stain on. Tomorrow I will be putting on the protective finish.
If everything goes as planned I will be posting on Monday about our newly refinished hardwood floors.

Oh, jee-zus…. whatever you do, do not let the sander remain stationary for even one second! Let the machine do the work, meaning, let it start rolling before touching the wheel down to the surface. Otherwise you end up with grooves all over the place. It’s one job that I always let the pros do.
One question: why are you doing the floors BEFORE painting, etc?

You’ll do a great job. You have a construction thumb. Everything seems to turn out good- and you aren’t afraid to take on the big stuff. I’m surprised you haven’t sanded floors before! You ripped them out in your old house… I think that’s more intense.

Yeah you have. You were eleven or twelve when you and I refinished the kitchen floor. And Justin is right, those big belt sanders are difficult. The last few time I sanded our floors I went with ab orbital sander … much easer. You may want to consider just doing your first pass with the belt, then going back and rent the big orbital for the last couple of passes. We hung sheets in the doorways to slow the spread of dust. It takes about 1/100th of a second to suck the whole sheet into the sander. Also, remember that if you accidently unplug the sander, turn the switch off before plugging it back in … or you’ll be mudding for another week! Experience talking here. Good luck you two!
