Flooring Repair

After much debate, we finally decided to patch the worst part of our floor in anticipation of refinishing the whole thing. We were lucky to find replacement boards on our first call to the Wood Floor Warehouse. Apparently they are the only ones in town that have replacement boards for the old red oak floors. Pricing was fairly resonable at just over $3 a square foot. We only had about 20 square feet to patch. The actual patching was a lot easier than I thought it would be. We should be sanding an refinishing them this weekend and starting to paint next week.

Can you talk a little more about how you did the patch? I have some similar issues with my floor but am very intimidated by the process. Thanks!

Wow, this is good to know. We have the same floors in our new old house, but haven’t yet pulled up the carpet to see what condition they are in.

    Rebecca,

Luckily my bad spot was next to a wall, so I just ripped up the old boards to the wall. When you get them ripped up you will see they were all nailed on one side. You want to start replacing boards from one side moving across, allowing you to nail the same side of your new boards that they were nailing. Use an old board for pounding so you can make sure your boards fit tight. When you get to the last board, you will most likely need to cut off the bottom of the groove to get it to slip into place. You can either use liquid nails to glue it in place (leave something heavy on it over night) or you can top nail it and just countersink your nails. Hopefully this makes sense. Do a google search for hardwood floor repair. I’m sure it will turn up some better instructions.
