Moving

Sorry everyone, we are right in the middle of moving. Normal posting should resume sometime next week….
Salt Lake City Craigslist Finds

Sorry this is sort of a Salt Lake City locals only post. I have been hooked on Craigslist lately looking for any good deals for our new house. I came across these two pieces the other day, and while they didn’t quite fit my need, I thought they were pretty cool. The chair on the left is an Overman leather recliner with a rosewood case. It has a great classic danish look to it, and for $95 its a good deal. The dresser is solid walnut with white drawer fronts. It could use a little help with the drawer pulls, but it has a great look to it. I especially like the base. Once again, very classic danish/Mid Century and only $95. Both are for sale by a guy named Rick, check out the Craigslist ads for more info.

More Ikea Summer Goodies

I featured an Ikea chaise lounge a couple of weeks ago that was a bargain at $159. If that is too rich for your blood, but you are still wanting some good outdoor furniture, the VADERO bench may be just right for you. The bench alone is only $79 and at nearly 4′ long should provide some quality seating for two. Combine it with the VADERO table, which also doubles as a footstool for $59 and you’ve got a nice flexible setup. Both are made from oiled solid acacia wood, so they should stand up to the elements quite well. The bench is shown here with a VADERO cushion which is 100% cotton and machine washable. It will set you back $50 which doesn’t sound like quite as good of a deal considering the price of the bench. They are all part of Ikea’s seasonal summer designs, so they may only be available for a limited time. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Not available online. Check your local Ikea for availability.
Muji Tape Dispenser
I love it when someone takes a simple everyday product and makes it beautiful. Muji has been doing it for years, and although their prices range from affordable to expensive, this Tape Dispenser is definitely on the affordable side. For only $2 you can have a great looking tape dispenser from the MoMA store. It will probably cost you more than $2 just to ship it, but you will still have a great looking tape dispenser for cheap.
Available from MoMA Store for $2.
We Sold Our Little Dream
I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that we were thinking about selling our home. Even though we had just barely finished it, it seems that the grass is always greener…. We put it on Craigslist and had a really great response. We ended up having a open house a couple of days later, and had a good crowd show up. Some were just there to see our pad, but one was looking to buy. It turns out that three days after putting it on Craigslist we had a verbal offer. Since neither the buyer or myself were using a realtor it took us a little bit to work out some of the kinks, but as of last Friday we officially no longer own the home. Although it will be hard to leave such a wonderful house we still feel good about it. Initially we set out to see if a Modern styled home could be had on a common mans income, and I think that we proved with enough hard work and persistence it can. The new owner is an architect and really appreciates what we’ve done, which makes it all a little easier to swallow. In a turn of irony the home that we wanted to buy went under contract before we could snatch it. Luckily things worked out that we were able to find another great home in an amazing neighborhood. It is a vintage 50’s grandma’s home just waiting for some tasteful updating. That means that there will be plenty of DIY affordable modern remodeling posts to come.
Felt Coasters
Designer Josh Jakus makes some nice looking totes, clutches and winepockets out of felted wool. When he realized that in the production of these pieces he had a whole slew of perfectly round felted circles laying around he did what any good designer would do, find a use for them. Making them into coasters saves them from being thrown away, and adds a little extra cash in Josh’s pocket too. $18 for six coasters to be precise, which may be a little expensive for something that they used to just throw away. Still I’m glad they are using as much as they can of the material and not wasting, that to me is good design.
Available from Elsewares for $18 for 6 4″ coasters.
Green and Associates B1 Cup

Who says a plastic cup can’t look good. Though these B1 cups might have a grown up modern look, the sturdy plastic makes them a great option for kids. Each cup is made of a white hard plastic exterior and a softer brightly colored interior. They are available in blue, green, yellow, orange, and red, and each cup stands 4″ tall and 3″ wide. Just to make things a little easier they are microwave and dishwasher safe. They are $7 each, which is quite a bit more than my plastic Ikea tumblers, but then again, they do look quite a bit better! Plates and bowls are available as well.
CB2 Go Cart Desk

I’m always on the look out for a new desk since the one I made when I first got married almost 5 years ago is starting to show it’s age. I think the first thing that really caught my eye when I saw CB2’s Go Cart Desk is that nice powdercoated mandarin paint job. I’m such a sucker for orange. I also really like how simple and mobile it is, which would be a big change from my current desk which is very bulky and impossible to move. Priced at $149 its a pretty good deal too.
Available from CB2 for $149.
Age Cage, Salt Lake City
Driving home from work yesterday I noticed there is a new store that sells vintage furniture. I thought I better go check it out to see if it was any good. The Age Cage is all about vintage, but not necessarily modern, although they did have a few decent danish pieces. Most of their goodies comes from estate sales, and the variety was pretty good. They have only been open for two weeks now, so who knows what the future holds. Prices certainly weren’t discount but depending on the piece they weren’t too bad either. The chair shown below (click on continue reading..) was around $120, the coffee table around $170, the set of kitchen tins $25. The Age Cage is located just behind the Tea Grotto on 21st South and 9th East, and it’s definitely worth checking out if you are in the area.
Muji Acrylics Calendar

I love Muji. They have a way of simplifying everything and making it look good at the same time, something that is not always easy. This acrylic calendar is no exception. It features a grid and acrylic numbers that can be moved around depending on what month you are in. Sure, it’s going to take you a bit more time than flipping the page on the calendar your insurance company gave you, but I guarantee that it is going to be much more rewarding too. It comes with a stand so it can be conveniently placed on your desk.
On sale at MoMA store for $12.
