Modern Materials and Design
26Feb08

If you live in Salt Lake like I do, you know that there is a select number of modern stores at our finger tips. One of the newer kids on the block is Modern Materials and Design. I have been following them since they opened in Sugarhouse, and then moved up the road to the Brickyard area. It looks like they are getting ready for another big move, this time to the internet. They have decided to go straight internet, and will no longer have a brick and mortar in SLC. With the recent closing of Form and Function followed by By Design moving into their warehouse, and now Modern Materials going straight internet it appears modern is on the run. I wonder if business is suffering now that Ikea has opened? The good news is that for those outside of Utah, you can now check out all the goodies at Modern Materials online. Their store had an overwhelming selection of EQ3 products which I always find to be modern and affordable.

Man, I just saw that Form and Function went under. That sucks, I loved that place. It has to be the Ikea effect.
I hadn’t seen this Modern Materials and Design before, their website is horrible! Where was their building in Sugarhouse? Are they the ones on the weird fork by 13th East and I-80?
There has to be somewhere in the area with some EQ3 stuff, besides the few pieces that RC Willey has.
I’ve been looking for months for a modern furniture store in Utah and finally ran across Form and Function and Modern Materials and Design online. I was so excited to go there the next weekend when I ran across your site saying they’re both closed. No wonder I had a hard time finding them! So I’m desperate now! I’m not a fan of furniture stores online - I need to sit on the sofa to make sure it’s comfortable. So anyone please help - any modern furniture stores in Utah???
Don’t worry Sherie, there is still plenty of hope for modern contemporary furniture stores in Salt Lake City.
My favorite is By Design. http://www.bydesignhome.com/
They just moved but still have a brick and mortar.
Manhattan loft is decent as well and has a newish store in the same area.

Copenhagen West is also a really good one. More scandanavian and Danish furniture, but really nice stuff. A little more pricey than some of the others perhaps.
