Conduit Fence
17Jan08
One of the best things about running this Blog has been the chance it gives me to meet all sorts of like minded people. It’s really through sharing ideas that we can make good design more affordable. David, one of our regular readers sent me a link to some flikr photos of a great modern fence he made out of 1/2″ electrical conduit. Not only does it look great, but I bet it was also pretty easy to do. The instructions come from the DIY network, complete with photos for all the steps. Also, make sure you check out some of David’s other photos of his remodel of a mid century home in the Seattle area.If you’ve got a good affordable modern project, make sure you contact us and share! Some of my best ideas come from readers.

I made a similar fence, but used 10′ rebar cut into 3.33′ lengths. The rebar is mostly rusted now, which gives the fence a pretty rustic look. I spaced it just right so our lab could get his head (but not shoulders) through!
By the way - we met you guys a while back at Seth and Rachel’s place. Glad to see that you guys are doing well and making great progress on your house.

These are both great ideas. I love the rebar idea as it seems like it would hold up better long-term. The electrical conduit can be bent fairly easily which would be a concern in urban environments. I have been meaning to talk to some local metal workers about some affordable and modern fence ideas and this will certainly be added to the list of future possibilities. Thanks for the DIY links also.
You’re right, Chad. This certainly isn’t a high security fence, but it will keep most casual malcontents out and my 20lb dog in (which is why I built it in the first place).
