Storage Resolution: Part 1

02Jan08

Dsc 0065-2It’s 2008 and new years resolutions abound. Ours is to finally get some decent storage built into our 1,300 square foot house, and we’re well on our way. We spent the weekend assembling this Ikea GORM shelving and filling it up with tools and other random stuff that had been hanging out in our hallway upstairs. We managed to fit an amazing amount of stuff in our small 6′ x 10′ mechanical room. We installed about 8 linear feet of shelving for just over $120. Best of all, we were able to get our hallway cleaned out so that we could start installing the cabinetry that we had planned for it….

I’ve got the same GORM shelving in my open loft and love it. We stained them black with a low-VOC wood stain and they look quite nice against an open loft in our loft. They have quite the assortment of shelves and accessories that make them very versatile. We have everything from wine to coats to power tools stored on them.

Sorry for ranting. I just love these cheap, efficient storage solutions from ikea…

Yes, but how do you keep track of what is stored there? We have a similar graveyard of old things, but we now have no idea what is stored where. Those 3-day-coolers, and the boxes stuffed behind them in the corner look so scary, because they will be full of old forgotten stuff.

Some guy, I promise it is better than the piles we had down there before. All of our bins are labeled to try and help us keep it straight.

So what’s the advantage compared to just getting a bunch of plywood or 1×4’s and slapping together your own shelving? I understand that getting the Pax is much easier than building your own birch wardrobes, but this stuff seems like woodshop 101.

    Chad,
It’s definitely the convenience factor. There is no way I could have built all that shelving in one morning.
