Ikea 2008 Catalogue
16Aug07

We received our much anticipated Ikea 2008 catalogue in the mail yesterday. I haven’t even had much time to look through it yet, but I was wondering if anyone else got theirs, or had looked at it online yet and had some favorites? I also was at Ikea Draper last week very briefly and remember seeing the new Karlstad Sofa shown on the cover for only $599. It looks like they added quite a few new sofa’s this year.
So what do you think about the new catalogue? Good? Bad? Boring?
Discuss amongst yourselves.

My wife and I really like Ikea. We haven’t seen the 2008 catalogue yet, but the one thing we noticed during our last visit to our local Ikea (Minneapolis) was that, while they still had a good selection of moderately priced items, they seem to be adding a sprinkling of items that seem to be much higher priced than what we are used to seeing at Ikea. Hopefully, this is not a trend.
I haven’t seen the new catalog in person yet, but have looked through it online. I noticed a few new things that looked great, but can’t think of any of them off hand. I agree with Steve above. I have noticed a few things that are a little higher priced. I recently bought a desk back in July. You know how on the catalog it says that prices are effective through June. Well that desk went up $10 which was kind of a disappointment. I still love Ikea though and frequent the place at lunch often (in Draper).
I got mine over a week ago. So far, I am eying the new BESTA storage system combos. Ikea has needed this for a while. The charging station insert is really great. I am looking at the white and frosted glass combos, or maybe even red and white.
I like the Stockholm items including the new chair, coffee tables, and media console which are going for a mid-century look. I saw some of it in person, and the quality is decent enough. The chair in the leaf fabric was beautiful. It will be a big seller. Everyone I know loves it.
The ANGA series is very classy and modern for tv/living room storage as well. Some similar systems I have seen were WAY out of any reasonable budget.
Then, we have the MANDAL series of bedroom furniture. It’s solid pine with dark drawers that have alternating cutouts as drawer pulls and it looks fantastic. The bed frame is very clean-lined with an upturned lip at the foot of the mattress. Then you can add that headboard with the shelves, which can be stacked. I like that there is an option from ikea that can give someone the option to get something that is honest and of great visual interest. Truly modern. Another winner for Ikea.
There is lots of great stuff in there. These are the biggies for me.
I personally love most everything Ikea has to offer, but I do not like the in store experience. I feel trapped in the store, so I choose the things I like and want to see before hand, take a deep breath and head straight to them when I get to the store.
This years catalog is great! I especially like the Akurm kitchen with the Nexus Doors and Drawers. I am also ready to buy the entire Broder Galvanized Steel storage items.
Andrew,
I agree. I can really tell the difference when shopping at the Chicago store vs. the Minneapolis store. The Minneapolis store is designed to “trap” you once you enter and force you to walk through the maze of aisles, hundreds of yards long, in order to get out. It is very frustrating (in fact, it’s a little disorienting) and I will avoid going to Ikea because of it – especially if I just need a small item. I remember once getting to the check-out line and realizing I had forgotten an item, but the thought of wasting an hour walking back through the maze made me decide to skip it. The Chicago store, on the other hand, does not have the “maze” design and is much more open and accessible. I enjoy the shopping expereince there much more.
I remember reading about the design of the Minneapolis store before it opened. The article talked about how Ikea’s research had shown that customers buy more in their stores with the maze design than with the open design – so, they decided to use the maze for the Minneapolis store. I wish they hadn’t, it really creates a bad shopping expereience.
