Unless you have been living in a cave for the last 6 months, you have heard about the iPhone. It is the most hyped up phone ever to be released, perhaps even the most hyped apple product ever released too. Surely there is a good reason for all the hype right? Well lets hope so. Despite any potential downfalls, such as a virtual keyboard, you have to admit the iPhone really is a revolutionary product. The question is, at a base price of $499, will they really sell as many as they think they will.
I admittedly am a mac addict and will probably be waiting in line for the 6 PM release today.

How about you, will you be buying a iPhone?

i think so. at first i figured the monthly service fee might keep me away … but the base rate is $60 per month. i already pay verizon $50 per month. the base price for the iphone looks high … but is it really? new, revolutionary device that combines cell phone, video ipod, web browsing, email & pictures … seems like a sweet deal … the videos on the apple site are killer … i NEED it

Oh, the Apple hype…I for sure won’t be getting an iPhone for a LONG time if the price stays in the multi-hundred dollar range (unless someone buys me one, of course I won’t turn it down). The interface and design are very intriguing, but I guarantee there will be bugs that will take time to work out, so maybe way down the line, I might find myself with one, but definately no plans right now. I’m not an apple nutcase, and don’t own a mac, but from a product design background, they’ve got great design!

One bad thing for me about the iPhone is a pet peeve of mine. I can’t stand smudges on my cell phone. Especially if someone else happens to use my phone and “doesn’t wipe”! Can you imagine the finger smudges, ear and cheek “grease” that will cake the iPhone’s glass surface? Since they can already do pretty much everything else, they should throw on some winshield wipers and wiper fluid to maintain a nice streak-free shine! My “brick” cell phone lets me talk to people, that’s about all I need. I’m not ever away from a computer for a long enough time that I need to surf the web, chat, or “order seafood?”. Like Leno said, another 20 ways to distract our already distracted drivers. Hang up and drive! Don’t get me wrong, I think they’re great, but I don’t think I’ll be spending my money that way.

I agree with the whole smudges thing. There is a local company, http://www.shieldzone.com/ that makes a great clear product virtually impossible to scratch, tear, etc. They make pre-cut pieces for various electronics. I have one for my iPod that works fantastic and still works with the touch sensitive wheel. I wonder if it will work on the iPhone?

I wouldn’t put off buying an iPhone for fear of bugs. Apple’s products don’t usually ship with the kinds of bugs others are used to. Besides, they’re pretty good about sending out automatic updates on a regular basis.

The money is only a matter of perspective. People have become so used to getting free phones, but they’ve paid hundreds of dollars for ipods for years. If you think about it as an ipod that makes phone-calls, it sorta changes the perspective. Not to mention the portable Web browsing capabilities.

We all have Apple to thank for changing the game. Now cell phone companies will start having to utilize more inteiligent design and user interface in order to compete. I read that the service plan is actually about $5 cheaper than equivelant phone packages with unlimited data when all is said and done.

All that said, I think they’ll sell more than they’ve publically targeted and people will pay for it.

i got mine tonight downtown SLC, utah. i waited in line for about an hour and a half, starting at 5:15pm. there were about 100 left when i got mine (the store got 170ish). it’s great so far.
i cut out a screen protector to use temporarily, but i’m shopping for a nice case. any recommendations?

I got mine last night too. I went to the at&t in fashion place mall because it had the shortest lines. I am actually typing this on my iPhone right now. As far as cases and protective screens, I don’t have one yet but I am sure the market will be inundated with them soon.

This thing’s built like a tank! Did you see the scratch/drop tests on PC World?

I too am a mac addict. My question is: How can you be a person strongly influenced by modern design and not be a macaphile? Their machines are beautiful pieces of design. I can’t afford an iphone right now, but Cingular gave me a free iTunes enabled phone for switching over. If I bought the iphone right now my girlfriend would kill me… that’s vacation/ring money. I’ll get one for my birthday in October.

I too thought $500 was waaaaaaaay too much for a phone. But then it occurred to me … I spent $500 on my first iPod! It’s was a second generation, 20 giger. So, is $500 really too much for a video iPod / PDA / Phone / web browser? Maybe not. I won’t be getting one right away, but it might be sooner than I originally though.
