James, good question. The louvers are for air flow. In the hall we have two large operable skylights. The idea is that in the summer we will be able to open them up, and the hot air will rise through them which will in turn draw air through the windows to our nice shaded cool courtyard. This passive cooling, along with the nice cool concrete are our only means of cooling our house in the summer. So far it has worked great, but it hasn't hit much more than 90 outside yet, so we'll see.

As far as privacy, there are no issues there. The louvers are fixed, so no matter what angle you look at them, all you can see is our ceiling :).

Creede, how did you come to the decision to ad louvered windows from the bedrooms into the hallway? Did the reason for adding louvers have anything to do with airflow and light? I was wondering if you feel like you're giving up some privacy?
