The louvers are for air flow. In the hall we have two large operable skylights. The idea is that in the summer we will be able to open them up, and the hot air will rise through them which will in turn draw air through the windows to our nice shaded cool courtyard. This passive cooling, along with the nice cool concrete are our only means of cooling our house in the summer. So far it has worked great, but it hasn't hit much more than 90 outside yet, so we'll see. As far as privacy, there are no issues there. The louvers are fixed, so no matter what angle you look at them, all you can see is our ceiling :). James, good question. The louvers are for air flow.
