4253861After a full year of design, arranging financing (twice) and selecting a contractor (twice also) and waiting for what seemed like an eternity for a permit, work on the ground has finally began.
We are building our dream home. It would be considered a humble home to many and weird to others but it is ideal in our minds. It’s a very simple modern design that is intended to be easy to construct. We have three bedrooms, 2.5 baths spread over three floors with two walkout rooftop patios off the third. We are building what we think is a relatively affordable modern home our total cost with land included is under $320,000.
Construction began only a few hours after gaining a permit thanks to Garth at Benchmark Renovation. They completed all of the excavation, fill and temporary electric in less than 48 hours. They will have the footings for the foundation in place tomorrow and all foundation work done by Friday. The framers are scheduled for next week. After a full year of talking about construction it is a huge relief to have it happening so fast. Keep posted for further hopefully rapid progress.

    Jacob,

I’m is Salt Lake as well. It’s good to see some folks trying to break the habit of master planned communities with 500 lots and 4 models to choose from.

I just wanted to ask and see if you looked into SIP or steel construction instead of traditional framing? I’m just trying to find out if those other methods just aren’t as cost effective in our area.

And to keep any home in the valley under 400K these days is nothing short of a miracle. I applaud your efforts to keep the price realistic.

    Wow!
I love it! It’s a much-needed change of pace. I can’t wait for the housewarming party invite.

I’m so proud of you, Jacob! (and, you, Michelle…for standing by your man and following his dream when it seemed less than ideal :). You’re both getting your dream home, after all.

You’re one hole closer to acheiving your vision for Lucy Ave!

Way to go guys!!! I’m thrilled that it’s finally underway. I can’t wait until it’s framed.

JasonJacobson, the original plan was to have a steel construction - but we found out early on that it was cost prohibitive, and just wasn’t going to fit into our budget. It was a letdown for sure, but we are still extremely happy with the design, even with the wood constuction.

Michelle, Thanks for the info. It’s good to hear stuff like that. If we were to believe what you read in the forums, you would think steel is the obvious choice. I’m guessing that the prices for steel adjust about as much as gas does. The sketch of your house looks great! I’m relatively new to this forum, but look forward to seeing the progress of your house.

Do you have a tentative finish date? I know from my own remodel that those dates are pretty flexible. It’s got to be pretty exciting to take on the project though. Good Luck!

Jason - our construction loan is a 9 month loan - and we closed on that about a month ago….so that leaves us around 8 months to finish. I’m crossing my fingers that we can get it built in time. We’d like to spend Christmas in our new house.
