The Tiling Begins
26Feb07

I started tiling our bathroom last week. I set the floor tile on Wednesday night and grouted it on Friday. Let me just say for the record, that grout is a wonderful thing. It makes a not so hot tile job look pretty darn good. On Saturday I put up the rest of the dura rock (minus one side of the tub that I was still clamping and gluing) and started on the wall tile. My stepdad and father in law both stopped by Saturday night and helped with all the wall tile. It was a huge help too. I never could have gotten so much done without them. I ended up getting close to half the bathroom done, and we are getting very close to being able to shower. We can hardly wait!

from the looks of one of those pictures I believe that we are in the same spot. ours is due in 7 weeks and I just finished the drywall in the bedroom. I hope to lay tile next week!
Love the bathroom. Where did you get the grey tiles? We bought a home in the San Francisco and our remodeling as well. It’s a fun, but stressful project. We are also expecting our first baby this summer.
LOVE the floor tiles. We recently put those (in white, unglazed) in our bathroom. I thought of doing the grey in our kitchen, but I’m worried it would make the kitchen look like a bathroom…
It’s looking so amazing though - can’t wait to see the completed bathroom!
Thanks for the encouragement everyone. At this point we’ll just be glad to take a shower no matter what the bathroom looks like.
The floor tiles were from American Olean, the wall from Dal Tile.
Hi, Sorry I missed the big tiling weekend, but with little AJS in tow, not much help and R down for the count with elbow tendinitis and prolotherapy! Looks absolutely amazing and I am going to look up the floor tile. I have always loved that design, you see it a lot in old arts and crafts homes and I think they make it in a little bit bigger size for my kitchen. How was it to work with? Did you buy it locally?
Looks great! The dog is a nice touch!
Sage,
Don’t worry, you didn’t miss much. I love hex tiles too, you should check out penny rounds, they are even more arts and crafts, and very cool. The hex’s come in 1′ x 2′ sheets, so it is pretty easy to work with. I got it at a American Olean Tile 2922 S 300 W, Salt Lake City ph# (801) 466-9736.
Thanks Bruno. The dog was about $50 a square foot. He’s a designer mutt, aka goldendoodle.
Thanks Creede! I will definitely check it out! As always let us know if we can help out in some way. Offers always available.
Does the grey tile from American Olean, have a specific model# or color (other than grey)? I plan to call American Olean this week to perhaps place an order.
This may seem like a weird question, but is there any concern about putting a shower head on an outside wall? My friend and I have been working on a new bathroom and we worried about freezing issues with the plumbing on an outside wall. The flow of the bathroom would be much better if we could do it, but we’re concerned. Any comments?
Good question Brennan, I don’t think it is a problem if you do it right. I had a pipe in an exterior wall freeze this winter. It was going to my washer. I ended up riping the drywall off to get to it, and discovered that there was no insulation in that part of the wall. I think as long as you insulate well between the exterior and your pipe you will be ok.
I think you’re also supposed to wrap insulation around the pipes and tape it in place.
