Britax Marathon – Couture Soho

My wife and I have this talent. We can walk into any store looking for something, and inevitably the thing we fall in love with is always the most expensive. Unfortunately for us, car seats are no different. We made a couple of choices up front. We plan on using a sling, so we didn’t really want or need a car seat that was easy to tote around. Being cheap, I like the idea of not having to buy multiple car seats as the kid grows. This lead us to wanting a conversion car seat. Britax generally receives top reviews for all their conversion seats, and when we saw the print on the Britax Marathon Couture Soho, we were sold. Of course it was the most expensive print from the most expensive manufacture of conversion seats. The $299 price was hard to swallow, but throwing down a bunch of cash for our babies safety is pretty easy for me to justify. plus I still had some birthday money left (Thanks Lucia).
The next challenge was finding a store that actually had it in. After literally hours of searching online and countless stores that were sold out, Albee Baby came through for us. You couldn’t order online, but you could call in to order. I placed my order first thing this morning, and was told that it was amazing that they actually had it in stock.
More info on the Britax Marathon here.
Available from Albee Baby for $299

slings are great but what about when you need to run into the post office for 5 minutes and there’s a snowstorm and your baby is asleep in the carseat? that’s when its nice to have a carseat that you can carry. we have a britax for our toddler. i got it because it is the cushiest one i could find. we love it.
We also have a Britax, and it’s a great choice. It sits nice and high, so our two year old can see out the window (helpful when pointing out horses or dogs). We went with the Holstein cow print, but that one you’ve selected is way cool.
We also bought britax, loved it so much, we bought another for the second (yes, we have two) car, because it became a chore to move it back and forth. The quality is second to none. Some of the other child car seats we have seen look like they are made way too flimsy, and they never strap down tight. The britax seats are a snap to install, and nearly impossible to get it wrong.
Bought both online, because no stores around here cater to people like us, I don’t understand why anyone would buy anything less than a britax.
So funny that we’re on the same wave length–again. I decided that with the second one on the way we would also try to sling the baby. After reading the reviews online and then finding patterns for Hotsling and Moby Wrap-type slings I purchased the appropriate fabric at one of the local stores. We’ll have some really cute modern slings for pennies on the name brands.
Then it came to the car seat. I definately bought our first based on the safety rating for removable car seats. We bought another base for our other car. However, the fabric choices were just awful. I decided to be practical and just got the seat, so our first son had to ride around in a plaid and gingham monstrosity. When my MIL accidentally ruined the seat, I had free reign to sew another cover. I finished our modern cover last night and had a great time sewing it.
Check it out!
Thanks for all the great comments. I wondered if anyone has comments on using a conversion car seat with infants?
Carina, love your cover. Way better than the original. I would love to see your slings too!
We have used the Roundabout since our daughter was born (she’s almost 8mo). I also use a sling/bjorn. I am too cheap to spend on a carrier that she’d grow out of in 6-12 months. We have borrowed a carrier seat for my husbands car and I much prefer the Roundabout that’s in my car. For me, it’s easier to just pull her out and carry her, than carry her and the carrier which adds an extra 10 pounds and is NOT at all comfortable. It either digs into my arm, because I can’t just carry it by the handle in my hand, but need to support it by holding my whole arm horizontally, or it bangs in to my side/legs. And, our baby only weighs 15 lbs. I can’t imagine using it all the way up to a 22 or 30 lb limit.
As for the sleeping infant-out-of-the-car benefit, if she’s really sleeping, she’ll just stir as I bring her inside. She’s gotten used to the feeling, I suppose.
That being said, my husband likes the convenience of taking out the seat & there have been times when it was convienent. For instance, dinners out before she was old enough to sit in the high chair on her own. However, I always felt mean keeping her in it for any length of time.
For our next child, we’ll use the convertible again, even as a newborn. Now, we’re looking to get a second seat for my husbands car, since she is getting too tall for the borrowed carrier. We’re deciding between another Roundabout & the slightly bigger Marathon. Too bad the Marathon won’t fit in my car (read-facing) – I love the “fashion” prints!
Another vote for the Britax. Both our girls (20 months and 5 years) are in Britax Car Seats (yes, our five year old is still in a five point harness – not a booster with seat belt – Britax has great options for those who want their kids to stay in car seats longer). The Britax seats fit so securely into the car, and are so much more padded and comfortable than other brands.
In my opinion, slings/pouches/wraps are the way to go – the baby car seats are SO HEAVY and awkward to carry. If my babe was asleep, I just popped her into the pouch (www.hotslings.com – love, love, love – great retro fabrics) and away we went – she’d almost always fall right back to sleep, snug and happy.
The Marathon wouldn’t fit rear facing in our little car either, but the Roundabout fit quite well – that’s what our younger daughter rides in.

We plan on using a sling too. It just seams to make a lot more sense than lugging around a big car seat everywhere.
We have 18 month old twins and bought two infant seats and bought FOUR Britax seats. The sling is great, but a decent infant seat is only $150. Well worth it when you can leave the baby sleeping under a table in restaurants and when a nap starts before you get back to the house. Also, big babies only last in a sling a few months at best.
My husband and I share child-care responsibilities –he drops them off before work and I pick them up. While the Britax set us back financially, I love the Soho pattern and my husband is happy he could pick velour red for his car. Good choice–you won’t regret it!
