Voss Water

05Sep06

200609051015The other day I was at the farmers market, and I was dying for something to drink, so I wandered over to Tony Caputo’s looking for a something not sweet and refreshing. I came across the Voss water, and as always was entranced by the beautiful glass bottles that they come in. So I finally pulled the trigger, and bought a 4 dollar bottle of water. I justified it in my mind by telling myself that I wasn’t really buying a 4 dollar bottle of water, but I was buying a 4 dollar modern glass jar, that just happened to be filled with water. Lets be honest, thats the real reason I was buying it. So, how was it? Pretty much tasted like water to me, maybe next time I will have to try the sparkling kind. On the good side, the bottle really was quite nice, and I am sure I will find many uses for it in the future.

Since I drink nothing but water and lots of it- I consider myself somewhat of a water snob. Voss is the best water on the market today. It’s like drinking “AIR”. There is no aftertaste, no sodium taste and leaves you refreshed. The glass bottle allows the contents to become what seems to be colder than plastic and you can recycle the glass. Give it a try. ( It can be purchased at Cost Plus World Market for $3- big bottle)

Glad to hear the feedback Terry, Look for my post on their new energy drink coming soon.

    It’s $4 for a water bottle. What’s a rip off?
Isn’t it awesome though? Art that is. That fact that you buy some specific water because it’s in a bottle slightly prettier than the others.

I would really like to find a store near me that I can buy some Voss water (I also love the look). Other than farmer’s markets and the like does anyone know of any chain stores that carry this water? i.e. kroger’s, biggs, costco, etc.

    thanks so much!

I bought my first (and only) bottle of Voss water from a vender at JFK airport in 2003. It was stupidly expensive, over $8. However, I was parched, a bottle of water in a plastic was half the price, and I reasoned that a) good design is worth money b) glass is better for the environment than plastic and c) I’d toss another bottle but this one would compel me to find other uses for it.

I’ve used that Voss cylinder as my daily water bottle ever since, refilled from my Brita pitcher at home and water fountains elsewhere, so I cannot say it was a bad value overall. It seems pretty durable. More than a few times I’ve thoughtlessly dropped my bag or otherwise risked shattering it, and it has survived.

Voss sparkling water tastes fabulous. Also, I love the bottle. I have a couple of the regular water bottles also. In Tucson, I purchased them at A.J.’s specialty market in the La Encada center.

I’ve heard that plastic leaks certain chemicals into the water. I love my Naglene bottle but now concerned about the plastic. So I broke down and bought VOSS. Mine was 1.99 at my local market. You’re right, this is good water. I also bought with with the intention of using it as my water bottle. So good all around.

A bottle of spring or mineral water has become the lifestyle accessory of the health-conscious. No longer a luxury item, the beverage has become a common sight worldwide.

But according to campaigners, the planet’s health may be suffering as a result.

A new report warns that people’s thirst for bottled water is producing unnecessary garbage and consuming vast quantities of energy, even in areas where perfectly good drinking water is available on tap.

The report, released earlier this month by the Earth Policy Institute (EPI), says global consumption of bottled water doubled between 1999 and 2004, reaching 41 billion gallons (154 billion liters) annually.

Bottled water is often no healthier than tap water, but it can be 10,000 times more expensive, says Emily Arnold, a researcher with the Washington D.C.-based nonprofit.

“At as much as $2.50 [U.S.] per liter [$10 U.S. a gallon], bottled water costs more than gasoline,” she said.

Most of this extra cost is driven by transportation and packaging.

“Nearly a quarter of all bottled water crosses national borders to reach consumers,” Arnold said.

The report gives the example of one company in Helsinki, Finland, that in 2004 shipped 1.4 million bottles of Finnish tap water to Saudi Arabia—2,700 miles (4,300 kilometers) away.

Well-known French brands Evian and Volvic export between 50 and 60 percent of their water to destinations across the globe.

The report lists the U.S. as the world’s biggest drinker of bottled water, consuming 7 billion gallons (26 billion liters) annually. Mexico has the second highest consumption, followed by China and Brazil.

Italians drink the most per person, equivalent to about two glasses a day.

I have to disagree that tap water is “often just as healthy” as bottle water. Even when we’re talking filtered tap water (e.g. Aquafina), which this blog post is NOT, putting tap water through reverse osmosis removes contaminants, including chlorine and particularly the fluoride.

Voss is an artesian water, which has a legal definition, and is thus in a completely different class than the most of the bottled waters on the market.

I first got turned on to Voss water at a Japanese restaurant in Santa Monica (Sushi Roku). I too was intrigued by the gorgeous bottle and the fact that it was glass. But it’s the taste that led me to find out where I could buy some. This is the best water I’ve ever tasted, plain and simple, and I’ve tried ‘em all.

VOSS water is one of the clearest example of why the underdeveloped world thinks the developed part of the world is obscenely wealthy, selfish, spoiled rotten and deserves the wrath of the poor.

  19. RH on December 9th, 2007 4:36 am

Did you know Voss water is actually Norwegian tap water? And it´s not botteled anywhere near Voss either. Always funny thinking of all the cash I´m flushing down the drain while on the toilet. And the showers!

  20. EB on January 22nd, 2008 3:29 pm

Well, norwegian tap water usually has good quality.

  21. Christine on January 23rd, 2008 6:14 pm

Voss water is not Norweigan tap water just to clarify. Norweigans are also very concerned with the environment and always have been. The Voss plant is run on 95% hydroelectricity.

Norweigans have a 98% recycling rate and are surprised that Coca Cola and Pepsi spend millions of dollars fighting against recycling laws.

Voss also supports Pump Aid which helps people around the globe get access to clean drinking water.

  22. Don on February 28th, 2008 3:17 pm

Just buy a filter system - it’s water - it’s not worth the money. You’re buying the name.

Common stuff in Europe is much better than the best that the US can produce. It’s very much worth all of the money. Europe rules!

  23. Ishq on March 21st, 2008 8:26 am

I’ve been looking online to see where I can buy Voss and the only place I see at the moment is Cost Plus. Does anyone know where else I can buy it?

And, as much as I agree that $3 - $8 is a lot for a water bottle, I really want to buy Voss water for the purpose that it is in a glass bottle. Studies have shown that leaving plastic water bottles in heat causes some kind of reaction that can cause cancer if the person were to drink that water. And, I’m a tennis fan so I kind of need water if I’m going to be sitting in the scorching sun all day. So I guess what I’m trying to say is that Voss may seem ridiculous but at the moment, it is a wonderful solution to my problem. :)

  24. Patricia on March 27th, 2008 12:14 am

I absolutely love Voss water. It leaves no after taste and it tastes pure.

  25. Edel on April 4th, 2008 8:33 am

I accidently came by Voss water (in the glass bottle) in our local liquor store…yes, in an less than affluent neighbord. I am hooked! Regardless of what the naysayers believe, for me it is the taste and how it quenches my thirst. The taste is pure and clean and is very light on the palate. Also, my complexion seems to have cleared. I am going to test this theory…good drinking.

  26. Eric on April 21st, 2008 8:13 pm

I had Voss water at the Red Sqaure in Atlantic City and it didn’t taste like regular water at all. It was really smooth and natural tasting…its hard to explain the taste but its the best tasting water I ever had.

  27. Marco on April 29th, 2008 7:37 am

There is a better water option than Voss. The reason Voss has any claim to fame other than the bottle is its purity. At one time it was the purest water in the world from natural sources at 24TDS (Total Disolved Solids). Lauretana from an artesian well in Graglia N. Italy has been certified as the PUREST ON EARTH at 14TDS. Lauretana’s beautiful glass bottle is designed by PininFarina (who designs Ferrari). It is ussualy more expensive than Voss. Both Voss and Lauretana can be purchased at Tony Caputo’s Market & Deli. Because Tony imports Lauretana directly from Italy with no middle men it is cheaper than voss.

  28. Shelly on June 3rd, 2008 6:03 pm

Voss is the bomb i love this water, and i will never drink another water other than voss. The taste is “priceless” so basically it is worth the price, people will pay an arm and a leg for unhealthy crap but when it comes to something that is actually good for us they gripe and complain.Anywho i suggest voss to anyone that is looking for the best tasting natural water there is toodles!!

  29. [...] around selling something that is almost free. For those water snobs only a bottled water like Voss will do, but then there is the rest of us. Plastic water bottles have gotten a bad rap lately, [...]

  30. rose on August 2nd, 2008 6:38 am

I liked VOSS but I love Fiji water better. Too bad Fiji has a plastic bottle.

  31. Steve on October 18th, 2008 5:06 am

    Simply…the best!

While you may not agree with the high price, it is well worth it. While many bottled waters (still) are placed into a plastic bottle leeching chemicals into the water, the glass bottle does not allow this. The taste is simple superb.

Remember how good Coke used to taste in a glass bottle?

  32. Sean on November 21st, 2008 6:41 pm

    This is absurd.

For the cost of 800mL of Voss, that same amount can provide over 2 years worth of drinking water from your tap.

Oh the signs of an affluent society fooled by marketing. Let’s go drive a hybrid Tahoe while we’re at it!
