Affordable modern platform bed
30Jul06

My architect friend is re-doing a small pad about a mile from my house. About a month ago, he was getting ready to move in, and was looking for a bed. Unsatisfied with what he was finding in the stores, he drew me a quick sketch and asked if I could build it. Since I never turn down an opportunity to try something new (especially when someone else is buying the materials) I was all over it. The design was really quite simple. Two plain boxes wrapped in birch with a cantilevered top. The edges on the top were left exposed to match the desk I did for him a while ago. All in all I think it turned out pretty good. The price for materials was right around $250 when it was all said and done. The mattress is a 9″ memory foam. The duvet is by Dwell.
Lots more pics after the jump.

very nice. let me know if you want any more ‘opportunities to try something new’. I’ll gladly provide the materials for you to make custom affordable furniture for my entire house.
My bed is quite like that, but it has the added advantage of having nice deep drawers on both sides. Looking at it from above, the frame is a sideways “H”. Wheeled drawers fit in the spaces, and the two parts of the platform sit on top. It’s ideal for storing linens and such. Might be something to consider for the next one of these you whip up.
dc, if you have any projects in mind, and are not in a hurry I would love to arrange something. I am always looking to trade work.
MattS, Yea, drawers would have been a good call. It’s always nice to use all that space for something usefull.
thanks for the post! i would like to make a similar bed for myself, could you give me some technical advice (if they arent trade secrets)? i see that you made into two pieces. thats so it might be easier to move right? also there are what look like feet attached to the boxes, what are those? how did you attach the boards together, predrilled screws? any other details that make for a better outcome? thanks so much!
This bed turned out really well. Where do you get your birch ply from?
any blueprints? i am interested the construction of the frame…attaching the plywood seems simple enough…
any help would be appreciated
i wish i had a space to build furniture and the like. i haven’t had access to a garage or anything like that in years. such is the price for the downtown condo lifestyle, i suppose…
