Apt - Penta Sofa bed
09May06

Lets face it, there is nothing affordable about sofas. I sometimes hesitate to list bigger items like sofa’s and beds, because they are big purchases and highly dependent on personal taste. So what may be worth it to some, just isn’t to others. I am starting to decide though, that any couch under $1000 is at least doable, if not affordable. The Penta, from SOHO based apt just barely meets that criteria. Priced at $998 on sale this sofa boasts a number of cool configurations that makes its not so affordable price fairly reasonable. The top flips down to alternate between a relaxing deep-level seat with a high back rest, and a normal depth seat with a low backrest. It also flips out to make a nice double bed (see pics after the jump). It comes in a number of colors and two different materials, my personal favorite being the 100% cotton Bari.

You may be judging this piece from their website, and I’ll agree their furniture looks nice in the photos. But the two times I’ve visited their Soho store, I was disappointed. The furniture seems cheaply made and flimsy… there were a few brokern pieces around (that the staff mysteriously chose to leave on the showroom floor in plain view) which doesn’t say much about the durability of the construction. Also, you may have better luck ordering from their website, but I couldn’t even get a salesperson to answer a question… they were both engrossed in personal phone calls. (Although this kind of behavior is pretty common in NYC… )
I bought their green Lounge sofa bed a couple of months ago and I totally love it and my friend bought a few Malibu dressers and chests. Delivery was quick and everyone was super friendly. Can’t complain about the quality. I was in the soho store two weeks ago looking at some of the cabinets and the salesperson was very helpful. I didn’t see any broken pieces.
It’s good to hear both sides of the story. It’s always kinda scary buying something online, because you are totally judging the product off of the web design and flashy photos. I appreciate the real life feed back from both of you. Thanks!
I love APT. I walked in over a year ago just to check it out and just bought a Blast Sofa Bed recently. I found the service quite hepful and got a lot of input on color and and different options for dressers and chests to make the most out of my space. I’ve been a Linge Roset shopper but it’s so expensive. I can’t say the quality at APT is any worse from the abuse this sofa has taken. The sofa bed was delivered three days later. DWR makes you wait 2 weeks for ‘in stock’ items. Also, the sales people where laid back. I walked into LazyBoy and was jumped on by two sales people. The service at APT was helpful, but not pushy which I really like since I have trouble making decisions and pushy sales people make it worse. It was really a great experience overall.
I moved into NYC about a year ago. Coming from a large space in the burbs to a NYC studio was quite daunting of an experience. Having to find furniture that served multiple purposes, was hip and reasonably priced seemed even more of a task. I visited all the major retail stores, from Design Within to Reach (too expensive and not unique) to Ikea (where everything looks like it was stolen from a cheap swiss ski chalet) empty handed. I spent 2 mos with nearly 60% of my studio unfurnished. Everything I liked seemed to be way too expensive. I was walking around Soho last fall when I stumbled into a store whose vibrant colored furniture caught my attention. I resigned myslef to ‘just looking’, thinking that the sofas I really liked would be way out of my league. Wow, was I wrong. A stroll down Soho resulted in me purchasing one of my most fave furniture pieces to date, the Noon sofa in red. I couldn’t believe how reasonably priced it was! The store’s staff was awesome and delivery was seamless! I’ve even bought a cabinet piece just last month from APT because the sales process was so hassle-free. All of my friends gravitate to the sofa because it’s so comfortable…moreover, they think i spent a fortune!

Interesting topic… I’m working in this industry myself and I don’t agree about this in 100%, but I added your page to my bookmarks and hope to see more interesting articles in the future
