$349 sofa

23Sep05

Someone over at Livemodern asked about an affodable modern sofa, and this one from Scandinavian Designs came up. I thought it was such a good deal that I would at least mention it to everyone. Its called the Kiel Futon, and it is adjustable to three different positions (see pics). Available in grey microfiber with aluminum legs (as shown), or camel microfiber with black legs. Not a bad look for the price, I just wonder if it is durable? Anyone have any feedback?

Any word on this? I’m curious about the quality as well…

I understand that it’s offered at Dania furniture. There are several in my area (Seattle). I’ll try to have a look at it.

I just bought one of these for my mother from Dania, and it’s pretty decent. The upholstery is a microfiber with a suede texture, and there is a zipper on the bottom so that you can remove the cover. Most of the frame is built into the mattress, but it comes knocked-down with the legs detached. It actually took a little bit of maneuvering to get the legs attached - some of the holes were double-punched, and didn’t exactly line up right at first, but eventually we got it all put together, and it’s solid and really nice-looking in-person.

The photos don’t show it, but the sides fold up as well, so you can make it into a lounge.

The shipping weight is 159 lbs. so you’ll definitely need a friend to help out with it. It’s made in China, and when one store didn’t have the color I wanted, I was told that it could take 4-5 months to get it. Luckily, one of the other stores had it in-stock.

Has anyone used this kiel sofa as their regular bed every night? Is it comfortable, and easy enough for a healthy 80 yr old woman to flip up and down every night? How thick is the matress? And how firm? Thanks.

One other very important question: Does anyone know of a store that carries this on the East Coast (somewhere between New York City and Richmond VA)? Or one that will ship a grey one for a reasonable cost? I found a Houston store that will ship for $85, but only in black, and my mom wants grey. Dania will ship for $500 (i.e., $850 for sofa & shipping) … it’s not worth that much. Help please.

I have one of these, and I would say it’s a great couch, awesome for a temporary guest bed. Its an exersize in puzzle solving to flatten it sometimes, and the way to flatten the bits is to pull it all the way forward and flantten it out: this can be tough to do. I wouldn’t recommend it to the elderly.

It’s an awesome couch! I love it!

My sister bought this for their guestroom and I have to say it is a very comfortable guest bed. My dad also stayed there and he told me he slept great, even with his back issues.
I have one on order for myself!
When you put it in couch position the legs zip inside the back so they are hidden. Soooo, if you use this as a couch and the back is showing, it doesn’t look like a “futon”.

Don’t bother unless you want it just for show. I still absolutely love the concept of the design, but this is the worst constructed furniture I have ever owned. After about a year of what I would consider very normal daily use the fabric is torn where it bends and the middle section is indented from where my wife usually sits. We’re not abusive owners and we’re both of average weights. I will never buy from Scandinavian Designs again and I’m waiting on pins and needles for someone to construct something with a similar design with some real durability.
